Our organisation is in Myanmar which has it’s own distinct alphabet. By far the most commonly used typeface is the non-unicode Zawgyi, other Myanmar typefaces exist (both unicode and non-unicode). It is notoriously difficult to get Myanmar typefaces to display correctly, although things are improving in larger applications such as FB.
Do you know whether WPML is capable of working with Myanmar typefaces, and if so which ones?

please note that WPML doesn’t translate your content automatically. You need to insert your translations in your WordPress posts/pages yourself. So you will enter the content the same way as you would publish your regular posts, the post/page will be in another language. If you your WordPress sites can display your typeface correctly, it won’t be any different with posts created by WPML.
As it comes to using different languages, WPML comes with some pre-defined languages but you can add any other language manually:

I am using OXYGEN Theme by Laborator. I have already translated the language file of the theme into German (.mo and .po file) using poedit program. Can I use the translation in WPML plugin, or do I need to translate the site one more time?

if you already translated certain strings using the poedit program, that’s very good and you can simply skip that part when using WPML. So in your case, you will need WPML only to translate your post/page contents, menus, categories and other elements.

I have two questions regarding Multilingual CMS.
1. I want to use woocommerce BACS (Bank Transfer) checkout in several languages and I need BACS title, desription and instructions different in every language. Also, emails sent from woocommerce (new order, finished order, etc.) should be different for each language. Is that possible?
2. If I set up several bank accounts in BACS is it possible to determine one account to certain language and other account to different languages?

Hi, the String Translation plugin is included in the Multilingual CMS subscription or in the Lifetime. Sorry but there is no option to buy it separately. If you don’t want to pay each year, you can upgrade to the Lifetime after the first year by paying the difference in cost.

Basically, there’s a website which has two blogs connected to it, one for each language. I would need to merge the two blog and use wpml to manage the different languages from now on. There’s no need to keep the same authors, if this might be a problem. I would like to know if there’s a good way to put together the posts that have are written in both languages.
For example, let’s say there are 3 posts: Post 1, Post 2 and Post 3
Post 1 has both a french and an english version
Post 2, the same
Post 3, only the french
Is it possible that the translations for post 1 and 2 are connected?

WPML allows you to have some blog posts available in only one language, while other in two (or more) languages, this is not a problem.
If your blogs are running on separate WordPress installs now you will need to find a way to:
1. Move some of your posts (this can be done using WordPress import/export features)
2. Make the connections between posts that are going to be translations of each other – you will need to do it manually.
providing you will use one of your existing sites as the one when you will install WPML.
This is not necessarily. You would need to start with posts (contents) in one language anyway so if you can use an already existing site, that’s good and will help you to save some time.
I’m interested in using your plugin for designing multilingual websites, and themes which (usually) consist of static pages only, where the site user has a global language switcher showing on each page.
But I want to make sure that all text on a typical page changes language, not just the actual page content and the menu item labels.
For any website, as well as the actual page content and the menu item labels, I will certainly have short pieces of text on the page – call these text snippets (I don’t know what the WordPress / WPML terminology might be) – which are not part of the actual page content, eg a slogan in the header, contact info labels, or in the footer such as the label text for the link to the Terms and Conditions page or to the Privacy Policy page, etc.
My main concern here is that these text snippets change language as well as the actual page content and the menu item labels, when the user changes the language with the switcher.
Also the text for these text snippets needs to be available globally across the whole site, ie NOT just on a per blog post/ page basis, so I just have one definition for some global piece of text. And clearly for this I would have in a template a simple PHP call in the position where it is reqd in the template html, and passing in a key name which then returns the value of the key in the currently set lang. Clearly the text for these text snippet values need to be defined for each desired lang in the Backend
So MY QUESTION IS : Can you suggest / point me in the right direction how I might go about achieving this text snippet Backen definition and frontend insert AND which works with WPML multilang ? Note, I am fairly familiar with HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP but I have only just started learning WordPress in general, so whatever I need (apart from WPML) maybe part of the WordPress core, or can you recommend a plugin ? I am not looking for anything (much) more complicated than I have described.

in theory, WPML is ready to let you translate every single piece of your theme, including button labels, custom options, widgets, sliders etc. In practice, it looks like this: if your theme is WPML compatible – which means, was tested by our compatibility team (check this list please) it will be easy since all strings that need “special treatment” will appear in your WPML String Translation panel (you just need to install the String Translation module that is available in the WPML CMS/Lifetime package).
But if a theme wasn’t tested (and tuned) by our compatibility team, you can still do this work yourself, if you have some PHP skills (you say you have). You will need to create a special file called WPML config.
Please note that to translate basic stuff, such as posts, pages, menus, categories etc. is easy and should work out of the box with any theme.

1. Yes, if you write your own theme, you need to use gettex functions.
2. Yes, you can adjust the language switcher to your needs.
I have a new client, a lawyer bureau, that needs his website redesigned and translated from english in 4 languages: dutch, french, swedish and german. So in total 5 languages.
The WP theme I am going to use is compatible with WPML.
I am not sure which license of WPML is best for them. They are going to supply me the translations in a word document which I will ad to the website as soon as they are ready. The content of the web is quite simple, just around 4 pages per language with images and basic info. Possibly a contact form on the contact page.
What is best for this job? Blog or CMS?
What happened if they don’t want to renew their account yearly?
WIll WPML stop working or work badly if is not updated?
I am worried they might not want to pay more than the basic fee but I don’t want to leave them with a non working web?

the Blog subscription doesn’t include the String Translation plugin which is required to translate non-standard elements of your theme such as theme custom options, sliders, widgets, button labels etc. In practice, it means that some elements of your site will be displayed in Engish only.
If you want, to can start with the Blog version, and then upgrade to the Multilingual CMS one, if it turns us that you need it. You will pay the difference in cost.
If you don’t renew, the WPML plugin you have installed will still work but you will lose access to our support help and future releases. Please note that you will be able to upgrade from the CMS subscription to the Lifetime one after the first year and you will only pay the difference in cost.
Per year, we have a few major releases, if a new WordPress version is released, we usually release a new version of WPML to provide compatibility.

your theme is based on the Genesis framework, right? The Genesis main theme was tested by our team but we didn’t test the child theme you use.
To use the genesis themes you and to translate all elements you need to use at least the CMS subscription. But you can give it a try since our refund policy allows you to test WPML for 30 days without any risk and you can ask questions in our support forum during that probation period as well.
I would also want to know what will happen with the subscription/ sign-up forms, when you switch to WPML plugin because at the moment they are 2 different sign-ups with different API KEYS but if I switch to a Multilingual site will I have to use just one? for the primary account? Is it possible to configure it using WPML plugin to have people to subscribe for the english site and for the spanish one?

it depends on where these elements come from. If some of the strings you mention come from your theme/plugin and they were implemented correctly by the theme author (she/he used getttext functions to wrap the strings), they can be detected by WPML and translated by you.
If all these strings you mention come from the WooCommerce plugin, there should be no problems to translate them.

The blog version is meant for simple websites only such as blogs. But you can upgrade from Vlog version to CMS version later.

No, it isn’t. WPML doesn’t translate automatically. The purpose of making a website multilingual is to attract organic traffic from search engines such as Google. Only human-made translations count for Google.

User enter in the site and all site must appear in language of country where this user is located or if there isn’t the language of his country will appear language of default that must be english.

WPML can detect the user language, which is the default language set in the user’s browser. This option is disabled in WPML by default. You need to enable it in WPML settings.
So, if for example, a user has let’s say Italian language set in his Firefox browser, WPML will redirect him to the Italian version.

Please note that to translate basic stuff, such as posts, pages, menus, categories etc. is easy and should work out of the box with any theme.

OK thanks for that – Ah, so you call it “String Translation” .. I looked up the WPML docs on that and all seems OK. And also about making a / my own theme “Translation Ready” at : https://codex.wordpress.org/I18n_for_WordPress_Developers , re using __() and _e() etc .. so all clear
Also for the language switcher I’ll be just wanting to display a simple list of lang codes , eg “en de fr” up in the top right corner .. and I see you seem to like showing flags for the thing .. BUT I’ve seen the direct WPML php fn calls to get a list of used langs, incl their codes, and also the code for the current lang , at : https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/custom-language-switcher/ .. so I can just write my own php/HTML code for the switcher

I have a new client, a lawyer bureau, that needs his website redesigned and translated from english in 4 languages: dutch, french, swedish and german. So in total 5 languages.
The WP theme I am going to use is compatible with WPML.
I am not sure which license of WPML is best for them. They are going to supply me the translations in a word document which I will ad to the website as soon as they are ready. The content of the web is quite simple, just around 4 pages per language with images and basic info. Possibly a contact form on the contact page.
What is best for this job? Blog or CMS?
What happened if they don’t want to renew their account yearly?
WIll WPML stop working or work badly if is not updated?
I am worried they might not want to pay more than the basic fee but I don’t want to leave them with a non working web?
What do you suggest?
How many times WPML update itself per year?

Hi Raul,
the Blog subscription doesn’t include the String Translation plugin which is required to translate non-standard elements of your theme such as theme custom options, sliders, widgets, button labels etc. In practice, it means that some elements of your site will be displayed in Engish only.
If you want, to can start with the Blog version, and then upgrade to the Multilingual CMS one, if it turns us that you need it. You will pay the difference in cost.
If you don’t renew, the WPML plugin you have installed will still work but you will lose access to our support help and future releases. Please note that you will be able to upgrade from the CMS subscription to the Lifetime one after the first year and you will only pay the difference in cost.
Per year, we have a few major releases, if a new WordPress version is released, we usually release a new version of WPML to provide compatibility.

your theme is based on the Genesis framework, right? The Genesis main theme was tested by our team but we didn’t test the child theme you use.
To use the genesis themes you and to translate all elements you need to use at least the CMS subscription. But you can give it a try since our refund policy allows you to test WPML for 30 days without any risk and you can ask questions in our support forum during that probation period as well.

I would also want to know what will happen with the subscription/ sign-up forms, when you switch to WPML plugin because at the moment they are 2 different sign-ups with different API KEYS but if I switch to a Multilingual site will I have to use just one? for the primary account? Is it possible to configure it using WPML plugin to have people to subscribe for the english site and for the spanish one?

it depends on where these elements come from. If some of the strings you mention come from your theme/plugin and they were implemented correctly by the theme author (she/he used getttext functions to wrap the strings), they can be detected by WPML and translated by you.
If all these strings you mention come from the WooCommerce plugin, there should be no problems to translate them.
Hi, I need my website to have a language option (norwegian/english) and my WordPress theme recommends you. Will I need to make two different websites to make this happen? The blog version is meant for simple websites only such as blogs. But you can upgrade from Vlog version to CMS version later.
No, it isn’t. WPML doesn’t translate automatically. The purpose of making a website multilingual is to attract organic traffic from search engines such as Google. Only human-made translations count for Google.
You need yo enter all translations yourself You can also use one of the professional services integrated with WPML but for these you paid extra, depending on the number of words you want to translate.

Will the plugin give the option of having a flag or something in the top menu of my page for choosing language? I installed Atelier theme an e-commerce theme for WordPress that is compatible at 100% with WPML, I want that my site will work in this mode:
User enter in the site and all site must appear in language of country where this user is located or if there isn’t the language of his country will appear language of default that must be english.
1a. Italian user that enter in the site from Italy must see the site in Italian language, if he want can change language in others languages available example english or french or spanish…
1b. User that enter in Spain must see the site in Spanish language, if he want can change language in others languages available example english or french or italian…
1c. User that enter for example from Greece and lnaguage greece is not available must see the site in english language (default) and if he want can change in french, italian or spanish..
Now I hope that is clear my explanation, so I ask to you a simple guide to follow for realize this on my site, and before that i’ll buy WPML I want to know if with WPML plugin is possible realize what i explained before?

Hi Simon,
WPML can detect the user language, which is the default language set in the user’s browser. This option is disabled in WPML by default. You need to enable it in WPML settings.
So, if for example, a user has let’s say Italian language set in his Firefox browser, WPML will redirect him to the Italian version.

do you want to present your products in more than one language? Which means, translation your products to other languages? If so, use this plugin. It was created by our theme and you can read more about it here.
WPML allows you to translate all elements of your sites. Some themes need special adjustments to be made, especially to translate theme custom options. If a theme was tested by our team you will be able to translate every element coming from your theme without problems.
If a theme wasn’t tested, you will still translate most elements of your site, such as pages, posts, categories, menus.
