Hi Agnes, we have a question because we are not sure WPML is what we need.
We have three sites on the same topic hosted in different domains. One is in Spanish, the other in French, and the last in Portuguese.
We’d like to merge them all in a single domain using subfolders, like example.com/es/, example.com/fr/ and example.com/pt/
Each website has now a different theme and different contents, so we don’t really need to translate anything after merging them. Maybe just copying each website in its subfolder would be enough. How could WPML help us?
Also, we need the root domain (example.com) to automatically redirect the user to /es/, except if their browser language is french or portuguese, in that case they should be redirected to /fr/ or /pt/. Is that something WPML can do?

If you want to use a different theme and different contents for each of your languages, WPML won’t help. When you use WPML, you have to use the same theme for all your languages. WPML allows you to have different designs for your content but the theme is shared between the languages.
If we changed to use the same theme in all websites, but the contents were still different across them, would you advice to use WPML or it wouldn’t make a difference in our case?
Our main goal is to make it clear to Google that each subfolder corresponds to a different language, so e.g. a French user would find our French website in Google, not the other sites.
Both approaches: 1. using separate installations and domains for languages (which is your case now) and 2. using one domain and one WordPress installation with languages in subfolders have their advantages and disadvantages. You might want to do a research in Google or ChatGPT to check the details. For most businesses seeking a balance of ease and performance, one domain with a multilingual plugin (with hreflang implementation which WPML supports) provides the best opportunity for global traffic growth. If you have strong regional focuses, though, separate domains can help you capture more local traffic in specific markets. If you currently provide diffrent content for each of your languages you have done this for a reason, so in your case it would be better to keep your current solution. If you decide to switch to WPML you will need to manually copy the content of your other languages into WordPress which is a lot of work.

Hi, could you help us with the section “websites” when trying to buy one of the subscriptions for the WPML? What does it mean exactly? In the first option, we have 1 production and 3 development – how do we understand development? We are at lost here; does it mean that the Client could translate only 1 site?

thank you for your interest in WPML. In short, if you buy the Multilingual Blog package you can use WPML only on one site and the Multilingual CMS plugin on three sites.
So why do we say 1 + 3 (Blog) and 3 + 9 (CMS) you might ask. Let me explain.
Some of our clients maintain more than one copy of the same website: one copy is publicly used and another one is used only internally, for some testing. So instead of forcing our clients buy separate subscriptions for your production and development/testing sites we decided to allow you register some extra sites. So technically you can use WPML on 1 + 3 extra sites with the Multilingual Blog packages and on 3 + 9 additional sites with the Multilingual CMS. But those “extra” sites need to be registered as “development” sites when generating a WPML license key (WPML will ask you about this when you will be registering your site and generating the site key). Sites registered as “development” will have a small banner added to your site’s footer saying tat it’s a development site. If you plan to buy WPML for more than one client, or plan to use it on two different websites, the Multilingual Blog won’t suffice. I hope this helps.

I have been looking at your AI Automatic Translation for WordPress. It looks good with an automatic translation of the entire site. That looks lite it works fine with translating the site at first. But the content is not static. We add new things every week…

I know how the regular (manual) WPML Translation Editor looks like and how to use it. Do I use that or is there a special “AI-editor” or “AI-button” in the regular editor?

Please go to WPML > Settings and check the translation engines enabled. DeepL will be used first but you can change the order and try the WPML AI if you wish. Then you can go Products and click on the + icon to open WPML editor – by default it translates automatically but you can disable this feature by clicking Undo.
I’ve been a WPML customer for many years and tech support requests have always been answered within 24 hours, even on weekends. As you can expect fr-ch needs to be in fr and not english. the the origin subsite that has been cloned from the en-au site be translated to FR on the fronted while still maintaining a EN backend? If you use WPML, all your languages will be used within the same site (the same WordPress installation). Your existing posts and pages will be assigned to the language you will select as your primary language when configuring WPML. WPML won’t recognize the language automatically. For example, if you select French as your primary language, all your existing posts and pages will have French language assigned from the WPML perspective even if their content is in English or German. It would be best to test WPML on a test site first so that you can understand how WPML works and what options you have and only after think how you can use it for your specific setup.

Your CMS subscription will expire on October 27, 2024 and then you can buy a new one – the Blog package. And then unregister your existing site and register it with a new key. Please note that those two packages work a bit differently. You cannot use the String Translation plugin. If you have been using it thus far, you might run into some issues. Also you cannot use automatic translation and the WPML Advanced Translation Editor.

you can use the Polylang to WPML migration plugin but please note that pages migrated from Polylang cannot be edited with the WPML translation editor. They will be displayed fine on the front-end but if you decide to edit such pages, best would be to delete the translate and translate again using WPML.
So another option would be to translate everything from scratch using WPML (you can use automatic translation but for so many pages you might need to buy extra translation credits)

what you need is technically possible but it’s not a standard usage of WPML and you would need to test it on a test site before applying to your production site. I will explain how you could handle this:
1. You install and active WPML.
2. You add Czech as your secondary language and keep Slovak as you primary language.
3. You translate all your content to Czech (with the option to publish your translation). If needed you can make manual edits to your translations.
4. You go to WPML > Languages and you change your primary language to Czech.
5. You go to WPML > Languages and you click on Add/Remove languages and you remove Slovak. WPML will be asked you if you want to remove all Slovak entries. You click yes. Your site will see only Czech content.
6. You remove WPML.
However, as I mentioned, you would need to test this out first.

but the first plan you mean the Multilingual Blog plan, correct? If your site uses a classic WordPress menu (created in the Appearance > Menu section), such a menu can be translated with the Multilingual Blog plan. However the Multilingual Blog plan has some other limitations. Let me summarize these for you. WPML Multilingual Blog lets you duplicate pages built with Elementor and manually translate their content and texts inside the widgets, using the WordPress editor.
Content built with Elementor that you can translate with WPML Multilingual Blog:
– Posts
– Pages
– Custom post types
Content built with Elementor that you cannot translate with WPML Multilingual Blog:
– Global Widgets
– Elementor templates (including header and footer templates)

Hello,
WPML allows you to automatically translate meta description of Yoast SEO and also alts of your images. Just remember to instal the WPML SEO plugin (available in the Multilingual CMS package) WPML doesn’t know how you would like to translate your affiliate links so these you would need to handle manually. By default, all external links are the same for the original pages and the translated pages.
If I need to distinguish between sites in different languages, for example articles available in one language and the other not. How to do it?
You can leave some of your posts untranslated, no problem. WPML also allows you to have some pages/posts in languages other than your site’s default language. IT takes a while to configure WPML correctly. If you don’t have to do it yourself, you can consider contacting one of the WPML contractors: https://wpml.org/contractors/

Where can I find a list of the languages that you support? I saw on the site that you support 65 languages but which ones?

Yes, this is possible but you need to add the so-called custom languages. The best place to add these languages is to use our WPML wizard because it provide a convenient GUI for such purchases:

I’m currently using Divi with Polylang.
Divi supports suggests WPML as the better option, because better support en better compatiblity.
I’m thinking about switching from Polylang to WPML, but I don’t want a lot of hassle.
The website currenly has 650 pages, because we do all pages, all blogs and the webshop in 3 languages.
I’m trying to prevent hours and hours of work and also I’m trying to prevent technical errors that I cannot revolve, because I’m no technical expert.
What do you suggest?

I asked if someone can help me telling me how much time it would cost to switch from a specifici language plugin to WMPL.
I currently have 600+ pages so I need to be carefull in choosing what I would do.
Divi says WPML is the best plugin, so I’m thinking about switching, but I’m kindly asking for some information first.

I want to translate my client’s website to another language. The thing is that I want to overwrite the default language. Currently the website is in Slovak language. The new language will be Czech language.
Can you please tell me how can I achieve automatic translation, that will overwrite all current language with Czech language? I want to be able to translate whole website and replace everything to have only Czech website. That means that even when I disable WPML, website would stay in Czech language.
Is this possible with WPML?

what you need is technically possible but it’s not a standard usage of WPML and you would need to test it on a test site before applying to your production site. I will explain how you could handle this:
1. You install and active WPML.
2. You add Czech as your secondary language and keep Slovak as you primary language.
3. You translate all your content to Czech (with the option to publish your translation). If needed you can make manual edits to your translations.
4. You go to WPML > Languages and you change your primary language to Czech.
5. You go to WPML > Languages and you click on Add/Remove languages and you remove Slovak. WPML will be asked you if you want to remove all Slovak entries. You click yes. Your site will see only Czech content.
6. You remove WPML.
However, as I mentioned, you would need to test this out first.

but the first plan you mean the Multilingual Blog plan, correct? If your site uses a classic WordPress menu (created in the Appearance > Menu section), such a menu can be translated with the Multilingual Blog plan. However the Multilingual Blog plan has some other limitations. Let me summarize these for you. WPML Multilingual Blog lets you duplicate pages built with Elementor and manually translate their content and texts inside the widgets, using the WordPress editor.

– Posts
– Pages
– Custom post types
Content built with Elementor that you cannot translate with WPML Multilingual Blog:
– Global Widgets
– Elementor templates (including header and footer templates)

Hello, I have the blog lilifoodiestravel.com and I am looking to translate my entire site including everything that is meta description, alt of images, to be recognized on Google when people type queries in English. I do not have time for this and I would like someone or a complete tool to do it for me. Is your tool suitable? What would be my rate?
Also I have a lot of affiliate links on my site. Do the scripts that turn my links into affiliate links also work for versions in other languages?
If I need to distinguish between sites in different languages, for example articles available in one language and the other not. How to do it? I can adapt the content according to the language via your interface? Or is it available in my WordPress space?

Hello,
WPML allows you to automatically translate meta description of Yoast SEO and also alts of your images. Just remember to instal the WPML SEO plugin (available in the Multilingual CMS package) WPML doesn’t know how you would like to translate your affiliate links so these you would need to handle manually. By default, all external links are the same for the original pages and the translated pages.
You can leave some of your posts untranslated, no problem. WPML also allows you to have some pages/posts in languages other than your site’s default language. IT takes a while to configure WPML correctly. If you don’t have to do it yourself, you can consider contacting one of the WPML contractors: https://wpml.org/contractors/
