Our developers have confirmed there are limitations to translating the custom permalinks. Because it will create conflicts with other post types also.
Therefore as a workaround please try the following steps after a site backup.
1) Create a category *News*
2) Translate the category *News*
3) Assign posts to that category
4) Visit Settings>>Permalinks
5) Set the permalinks as */%category%/%postname%/*
6) Save the settings
"Because it will create conflicts with other post types also." Does this mean this feature will never be put on the roadmap?
Your workaround worked in this case because all posts were member of the same category, so I just had to rename the category. But on any site with multiple post categories, this workaround will never be possible.
Thank you for the updates. We will surely consider this feature. But as of now, there are many difficulties in the WordPress library to achieve this and it will be really time-consuming. So we don't have the exact time frame. Therefore it will be great if you can make a request.
If you are using SEO plugins like Yoast or RankMath, it will be possible to set *News* as the primary category. Please refer to the following links for more details.
