3. To generate the site key you need to be logged in your WPML account.

If your WPML account has already expired, you will see that information in your account and you can upgrade it also from your WPML account.

I was and am still using WPML Multilingual CMS 3.0.1.
I upgraded to WordPress 4.5.1 when I suddenly got 404 errors on all but the home page. First I switched off WPML and the original pages were showing ok.
In the end what borught back the WPML functionality was:
– deactiviate WPML
– change Permalinks to default, save
– change Permalinks back to custom, save
– activate WPML

Hi, WPML doesn’t translate your content automatically. Even if you buy the “Multilingual CMS” package, you still need to translate your contents yourself. The “Multilingual CMS” package include the “Translation management” plugin but it allows you to connect (integrate) with procession services. If you want them to translate something for you, this is also paid (pricing depends on the service). No automatic translations are available with WPML.

I am thinking about making my website availble in English too (now in the Dutch language only). Since I have read the page on website translation in WordPress codex and there it stats that the way plugins like WMPL add other languages would more than double the database-size going from one to two languages. Reading about WMPL makes me think that this is the most solid plugin to do the job, but I would also like to maintain speed and other technical issues. Ans since my domain is in the Dutch language I am also wondering if it may be prudent to use a different domainname for my English content.
My question is:
1. At what point would using WMPL translating a website start to effect performance of that website?
2. Is it possible to use multisite installations seperating the two languages while connecting the same content (being translations of each other)?
3. Is it possible to also separate the domains between languages and still connect the same content pages together using WMPL?
4. If starting of with just one installation of WP and WMPL, could that latter easily be transformed to f.i. a multisite separating the languages if some technical aspect would make that desirable? Is there a scenario fort hat?

I’ll try to answer all your question as best as I can:

This really depends on many factors, such as:
– PHP version
– The database (MySQL/MariaDB) and it’s configuration
– The availability of a server-side caching layer
Even having the best and faster environment, adding multi language support will inevitably increase the amount of queries ran by the server, but we are constantly doing our best to keep them at the minimum by optimizing queries, creating indexes in the DB where needed (in our custom tables, as the core tables are already properly indexed) and making use of the cache.
2. Is it possible to use multisite installations seperating the two languages while connecting the same content (being translations of each other)?
Yes, this is possible, but not with WPML.
If you want to use the multisite installation option, there are specific plugins for this.
WPML can handle languages in different domains for the same site, and can even run in a multisite installation, but translations are always handled as part of the same site.
3. Is it possible to also separate the domains between languages and still connect the same content pages together using WMPL?
4. If starting of with just one installation of WP and WMPL, could that latter easily be transformed to f.i. a multisite separating the languages if some technical aspect would make that desirable? Is there a scenario fort hat?

There is one thing in the option of languages in different domains that I would like to ask more specifically, because in my case that option would only have purpose if the second domain would not only be a subdomain or have a different extension suggesting a different language, but the core of the domain would be different ergo dewitteprins.nl would need to change to the English thewhiteprince.com or something (witte prins means white prince) like that. Am I correct in thinking that your answer excludes such a difference in domain-variation, so that the English domain-counterpart could only be something like “dewitteprins.uk” or “en.dewitteprins.nl”?
I much appreciate your answer already and will undoubtedly be able to choose after some study of the pages you advised. Perhaps translating the domain isn’t really that important, because it will be found by search engines based on page content and otherwise linked in some way.
When enabling the language in domains option, you can use any domain, that is, the domain doesn’t need to be based on the default language domain.
Of course, all these domains must be configured to point to the same site, but once you do that, the format of domain name bound to a given language is irrelevant.

I have old WPML versions in a few websites and want to get an account to be able to get updates. If I buy the lifetime version will I be able to update WPML in all those sites? And will I be able to add it to new websites?

2.) How is it linking between custom post types (I do not use any plugin, just pure registration custom post types in functions.php) – in this case same template.

1. If you want to use the WordPress Multisite and keep each language on a separate domain, WPML won’t help you, there are specific plugins for this. In WPML translations are always handled as part of the same site. However, WPML can handle languages in different domains for the same site . When you eneble the language in domains option, you can use any domain. All these domains must be configured to point to the same site. But again, WPML keeps the translations always as part of the same site.
2. WPML allows you translate Custom Post Types even if you registered them yourself. From a site’s visitor point of view the URL will look as all other URLs, for example (mysite.com/post-in-english – English, es.mysite.com/post-in-spanish – Spanish or mysite.com/es/post-in-spanish )

you won’t lose your translations even if you delete WPML. Registration is not mandatory but will allow you to update WPML directly from your WordPress admin so it’s a useful thing. Yes, you will need to register your WPML again with your new key (you will generate it in your WPML account) but first you will have to upgrade your WPML to the latest version.
If I want to use your plugin can I configure it so that it will generate the translations on another domain. So I want to translate my site to Bulgarian and I want when someone clicks on the Bulgarian flag to be directed to domain.bg (I own the bg domain) address?

Hi Boris, I’m not sure. The rule is that our supporters can help you will everything about setting up WPML. If your case an extra setup is required on your server’s side to point it to the same WordPress installation. So this is not WPML. Perhaps your hosting providers can help you here.

Hi, I’m a web developer for an agency which have paid for your plugin but I don’t have access to the key right now so I can’t log in as someone who purchased the plugin. I don’t know if you have a way of verifying it but I’ll still ask my question and hopefully you guys can help.
Basically the site is in English by default and we had it translated in French and Spanish. Everything works fine for this. But the client has a new request and I need to add a custom field (used ACF PRO) to some post type (testimonials) in all languages. Everything is still working so far, the custom field appears as it should and where it should.
The problem occurs when I try to add the desired information in the custom field. When I go back to the site, everything is fine in english but I have now lost all translations (I get “page not found” when I click on FR and ES). I found that people have had compatibility problems with ACF but it doesn’t seem to be my issue here since I’ve tried to add my custom field using other plugins and the same result happens.
I’m totally clueless on what could be doing this and would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out.
PS. I’ve seen some people having kind of the same problem since they were duplicating the original posts but this is not my case, all my posts are translated independently.

do you use the WooCommerce plugin? If so, using WPML and the WooCommerce Multilingual plugin (we are the authors) you will be able to translate your products to other languages. Including product descriptions, images, etc. But WPML doesn’t translate your contents automatically.

There is one thing in the option of languages in different domains that I would like to ask more specifically, because in my case that option would only have purpose if the second domain would not only be a subdomain or have a different extension suggesting a different language, but the core of the domain would be different ergo dewitteprins.nl would need to change to the English thewhiteprince.com or something (witte prins means white prince) like that. Am I correct in thinking that your answer excludes such a difference in domain-variation, so that the English domain-counterpart could only be something like “dewitteprins.uk” or “en.dewitteprins.nl”?
I much appreciate your answer already and will undoubtedly be able to choose after some study of the pages you advised. Perhaps translating the domain isn’t really that important, because it will be found by search engines based on page content and otherwise linked in some way.

When enabling the language in domains option, you can use any domain, that is, the domain doesn’t need to be based on the default language domain.
Of course, all these domains must be configured to point to the same site, but once you do that, the format of domain name bound to a given language is irrelevant.
So, supposing you have Dutch, English, French and Italian, you could set the following domains as you wish, for instance, like this:
– NL: dewitteprins.nl
– EN: thewhiteprince.com
– FR: leprinceblanc.fr
– IT: it.dewitteprins.nl

If I will use WP as multisite and use WPML to create one language per one instance of WP (for example: http://en.domain.tld – english, http://de.domain.tld – german and so on) – is it possible to link posts between these languages/subsite ? …if i read post in english version and then click to german version – will it show me same post but in german mutation? (for example: http://en.domain.tld/post and after changing language to german http://de.domain.tld/post) ?
2.) How is it linking between custom post types (I do not use any plugin, just pure registration custom post types in functions.php) – in this case same template.

1. If you want to use the WordPress Multisite and keep each language on a separate domain, WPML won’t help you, there are specific plugins for this. In WPML translations are always handled as part of the same site. However, WPML can handle languages in different domains for the same site . When you eneble the language in domains option, you can use any domain. All these domains must be configured to point to the same site. But again, WPML keeps the translations always as part of the same site.
2. WPML allows you translate Custom Post Types even if you registered them yourself. From a site’s visitor point of view the URL will look as all other URLs, for example (mysite.com/post-in-english – English, es.mysite.com/post-in-spanish – Spanish or mysite.com/es/post-in-spanish )

you won’t lose your translations even if you delete WPML. Registration is not mandatory but will allow you to update WPML directly from your WordPress admin so it’s a useful thing. Yes, you will need to register your WPML again with your new key (you will generate it in your WPML account) but first you will have to upgrade your WPML to the latest version.

Basically the site is in English by default and we had it translated in French and Spanish. Everything works fine for this. But the client has a new request and I need to add a custom field (used ACF PRO) to some post type (testimonials) in all languages. Everything is still working so far, the custom field appears as it should and where it should.
The problem occurs when I try to add the desired information in the custom field. When I go back to the site, everything is fine in english but I have now lost all translations (I get “page not found” when I click on FR and ES). I found that people have had compatibility problems with ACF but it doesn’t seem to be my issue here since I’ve tried to add my custom field using other plugins and the same result happens.
I’m totally clueless on what could be doing this and would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out.
PS. I’ve seen some people having kind of the same problem since they were duplicating the original posts but this is not my case, all my posts are translated independently.

do you use the WooCommerce plugin? If so, using WPML and the WooCommerce Multilingual plugin (we are the authors) you will be able to translate your products to other languages. Including product descriptions, images, etc. But WPML doesn’t translate your contents automatically.
