I’m new at the WordPress Arena, and I’m looking for a translator for my site. A friend told me about you.
I’m just wondering about one thing:
Is it possible to buy the Multilingual Blog and if for any reason I’m willing to upgrade to Multilingual CMS, the price to pay will be prorated?
We’d like to install your plugin on our website, where we have almost 10,000 posts in English. We are planning to include some articles in French and Chinese and would like to use your plugin. However, this will only be for a small number of posts, so is there a way to have the translation “flags” and options (in the sidebar) on only SOME pages and posts?
Also, what pricing option of WPML will we need to do this? Will the $39 option suffice? Thanks.

yes, you can translate only some of your artciles, WPML support this. If you plan to do it manually, you can buy the Blog package ($39). If you want to speed up the process of translation using automatic translation (of DeepL or Google Translate – we are integrated with both), you need the CMS ($99) package. You can always edit the automatic translations.
We are considering purchasing the WPML plugin for our WordPress site.
I’ve been advised by our IT Dept that they have used the WPML plugin before, but not with the Google Translate credits. We have concerns about using the free Google translation plugin due to accuracy issues, so we are just wondering if WPML uses Google Translate in the background, does it also vet the translation so that inaccuracies are ironed out? Or does it submit strings to Google Translate in a different manner to the free plugin?

the default translate engine of WPML is DeepL now but we support Google Translate too. DeepL provides better quality compared to Google Translate. You can test the DeepL quality by using their online translation editor: https://www.deepl.com/translator What you will get in WPML is almost the same (WPML takes care about the extra formatting, handling links etc.) Also, you can test Google Translate using their online tool. We connect to both via the built-in API. No, WPML doesn’t vet the translation but you can edit the translations if needed. When you install WPML DeepL will be used by default. If you want to switch to Google Translate you need to go to WPML > Settings and change the order of these engines.
I would like to use WPML as this is my favorite language plugin.
However I am concerned by comments online about pepople complaining about the SPEED.
If the pluging is well used,, what is the extra time that I can reasonably expect in terms of loading for my page ? (as compared with a page without the WPML plugin)
As with many things technical, the answer is: “it depends”. Your performance may take a hit at the very beginning if you have chosen to translate everything automatically using machine language until the entire site is translated (which can take some minutes). You performance may also depend on the type of site (i.e. online shop vs. portfolio), the number of plugins installed, and if the theme and plugins are compatible or not.

I have a few questions before I purchase WPML.
1. What happens, if the (90.000) Translation Credits are not enough to translate the complete site? Do I have to purchase credits, can I leave articles or pages untranslated or can I translate them manually?
2 Lets say I used mydomain.com/fr (setting: different languages in directories) as link structure. What happens to the link structure for the translated sites, when I disable the plugin? Will I get suddenly 404s or will visitors simply get to my untranslated site/url?
3. If I already translated my site and rewrite content, will that content be automatically translated? What happens if I rewrite content and have no credits left? Do I have to purchase credits or can I wait until I get new credits or can I translate it manually?
1. When you run out of 90,000 credits, you will be notified in the dashboard that there is a problem to be fixed. At that point, you will be asked to either “pay as you go” or to purchase “prepaid credits”.
If you do NOT select a payment plan, it is possible to leave articles untranslated or translate them manually. You need only pay for machine/automatic translation.
2. The quick answer is that links that include slugs will resolve to a permalink base that does NOT include the language code.
For example: let’s say you had a site that had http://www.mysite.com linked to “Home” page with slug “home” and http://www.mysite.com/es linked to page “Inicio” with slug “inicio”. You then deactivate the WPML plugins. A reference to http://www.mysite.com/es/inicio will present the “Inicio” page with the URL (permalink): http://www.mysite.com/inicio.
However, an external link to http://www.mysite.com/es/ will return a 404 because no slug is given in the link.
3. A new translation job will be submitted to “Automatic Translation” for the new content you edited/created. This is triggered on saving the original language version of the content. If you do not have enough credits, you will either have to purchase the credits as discussed in point 1 above, or you can choose to translate it manually.

I purchased the plugin and installed it, but it totally reset my entire theme (Jupiter – https://jupiter.artbees.net/) and everything was out of place in the header, body and footer. The font also changed, as did almost everything else on the site.

From what you describe, it sounds like your custom fields related to post type layout and style have not been set to be translated to the target language so the appearance is using unexpected values and changing. Layouts are also post-types that need to be set as translatable so that they will behave the same in all languages.

you can use WPML plugin because it allows you to translate your pages manually or automatically with the option to edit automatic translation. If you need to provide diffrent images you will need to use the Media Translation plugin (included in the CMS or Agency type of account).

If your language is not on the list, you can add it to WPML as a custom language but then you need to provide manual translations.
50 languages is a huge number. I’m not sure if any of our clients use such a bing number of languages (I saw websites with about 15-20 languages but not more than 20). Please note that you need to use translation credits to translate your content automatically. Considering the huge number of sites, the Pay-as-you-go payment seems to be the only option for you. It’s a recurring free if you decide to keep your WPML subscription after the first year (which is optional and required to get updates and support assistance). Clients who renew their WPML yearly, are getting 25% if discount so you actually pay $74 for the each next year instead of $99.
Hi, okay, thanks for this. Yes, the theme conflict issue has been sorted, and the website is now displaying fine.
One thing: we’re using the WPML plugin just to include some French, Russian and German versions of just a few articles here and there (maybe two a month), so I didn’t choose the “Automatic” translation when setting up the plugin.
However, is there a function within WPML that allows us to place a language (by flag) option, say, at the bottom of the page that allows for a Google Translation of each page or post, kind of like the plugin Translate WordPress does (https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-language-translator/)?
We have that installed, but it says it’s creating a conflict. Can WPML do the same as that plugin does?
Also, we have about 22,000 images in our Media folder (!), so we definitely DO NOT want to translate each of them into five other languages. Is there any way to ensure they are NOT translated when the WPML plugin is installed and activated? Thanks.
As mentioned in my previous reply, please use our forum to get technical help. Yes, you can add the language switcher to your site. Please go to WPML > Languages and there is a section dedicated to adding the language switcher. If you don’t use the Media Translation plugin, your images won’t be duplicated for translation. But if a post uses an image with the alternative text, you can translate this attribute along with translating the post.
Regarding the images, I didn’t want WPML to duplicate all the images we have on our site, but when I temporarily deactivated the plugin, I clicked on the Media library in WordPress, and there are now five copies of each photo? But these copies DON’T show up when the plugin is installed. Can you explain this?
Also, is the plugin duplicates over 22,000 images, will that take up extra space in my hosting, or does it just translate the text and tags of the images without effectively re-creating a copy of the image itself?
WPML doesn’t duplicate the images. It can duplicate the image entires in the WordPress database but doesn’t duplicate the physical copies of the images. Please use our forum to discuss the details. We need to understand your setup better to explain the the details.

Is there any difference in automatic translation quality between pay as you go and prepaid plans at all? Or is it exactly the same translation system that gets used for both?

I have a site with WPML functioning relatively well for mor than 7 years, however the designer and programmer of the site who purchased the software stopped working as such (started a family life and left programming) about 3 years ago. I was living in Spain at the time when the site was created and now I live in another country (Brazil).

I checked your website (the one you provided when posting your comment) and it was registered by someone with a diffrent email that the one you provided, named José (cannot provide more details) who has the Lifetime account. I can see that your site uses an old version of WPML 4.2. while the recent one is 4.6.2 and some of the issues you have might be because of this. In theory, you can upgrade WPML on your site (because your site is registered and the Lifetime license allow you to access the recent version of WPML) but upgrading directly from 4.2. to 4.6.2 can be risky (there is a huge gap between the versions). Only the person who owns the WPML account can access our support forum. If you are no longer in touch with the account’s owner, you can buy WPML for yourself and then you will get access to our support forum to help you with your issues. After buying WPML, you would need to unregister your current version and register WPML anew. On your WordPress site go to Plugins > Add new > Commercial tab. Reassigning the old WPML account (the one that belongs to José) to your email doesn’t seem to be an option because there are many many other websites assigned to this user which means this user might be actively using his WPML account. I hope this helps.

One thing: we’re using the WPML plugin just to include some French, Russian and German versions of just a few articles here and there (maybe two a month), so I didn’t choose the “Automatic” translation when setting up the plugin.
However, is there a function within WPML that allows us to place a language (by flag) option, say, at the bottom of the page that allows for a Google Translation of each page or post, kind of like the plugin Translate WordPress does (https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-language-translator/)?
We have that installed, but it says it’s creating a conflict. Can WPML do the same as that plugin does?
Also, we have about 22,000 images in our Media folder (!), so we definitely DO NOT want to translate each of them into five other languages. Is there any way to ensure they are NOT translated when the WPML plugin is installed and activated? Thanks.
As mentioned in my previous reply, please use our forum to get technical help. Yes, you can add the language switcher to your site. Please go to WPML > Languages and there is a section dedicated to adding the language switcher. If you don’t use the Media Translation plugin, your images won’t be duplicated for translation. But if a post uses an image with the alternative text, you can translate this attribute along with translating the post.
Regarding the images, I didn’t want WPML to duplicate all the images we have on our site, but when I temporarily deactivated the plugin, I clicked on the Media library in WordPress, and there are now five copies of each photo? But these copies DON’T show up when the plugin is installed. Can you explain this?
Also, is the plugin duplicates over 22,000 images, will that take up extra space in my hosting, or does it just translate the text and tags of the images without effectively re-creating a copy of the image itself?
WPML doesn’t duplicate the images. It can duplicate the image entires in the WordPress database but doesn’t duplicate the physical copies of the images. Please use our forum to discuss the details. We need to understand your setup better to explain the the details.

We are a Web Design agency. One of our clients is looking to build a multi-lingual website. The main requirements are –
1. Be able to have multiple content pages in over 50 languages
2. Use auto translation or if needed, make changes to the translation on specific pages/languages.
3. Let’s say we have a page X and content is available in 50 languages, each of the language page should have a unique URL indexable by Search Engines.
4. Ability to manage the SEO Meta Tags and other attributes for each of the page in specific languages
5. The Meta Tag generation should be available in each language by translation
Could you please advise if these all functionality are available in the Multilingual CMS version. The $99 is a one time fee or a recurring fee.

Okay, thanks for this. But just one more thing. Is there any way to use your plugin without duplicating the entries of the images in any way? I only ask since it really increased the size of my website’s database over the maximum limit, and now I have to reduce it.

You can also consider buying the Blog package (which costs $39) but it doesn’t allow you to translate automatically – you can create pages in other languages but you would need to provide the translations manually (or copy paste from DeepL/Google Translate or similar)

I have a site with WPML functioning relatively well for mor than 7 years, however the designer and programmer of the site who purchased the software stopped working as such (started a family life and left programming) about 3 years ago. I was living in Spain at the time when the site was created and now I live in another country (Brazil).
As I have some background in software, I took charge of the site and want to resolve some problems that I don’t find answer to on your tutorials, but it appears he opened the account on his name as a programmer (I think it was joseluis@andamira.net).

I checked your website (the one you provided when posting your comment) and it was registered by someone with a diffrent email that the one you provided, named José (cannot provide more details) who has the Lifetime account. I can see that your site uses an old version of WPML 4.2. while the recent one is 4.6.2 and some of the issues you have might be because of this. In theory, you can upgrade WPML on your site (because your site is registered and the Lifetime license allow you to access the recent version of WPML) but upgrading directly from 4.2. to 4.6.2 can be risky (there is a huge gap between the versions). Only the person who owns the WPML account can access our support forum. If you are no longer in touch with the account’s owner, you can buy WPML for yourself and then you will get access to our support forum to help you with your issues. After buying WPML, you would need to unregister your current version and register WPML anew. On your WordPress site go to Plugins > Add new > Commercial tab. Reassigning the old WPML account (the one that belongs to José) to your email doesn’t seem to be an option because there are many many other websites assigned to this user which means this user might be actively using his WPML account.
