WPML works pretty well with ACF and ACF Pro but for user profile fields we do have a gap and it won’t work our of the box. Some coding is required. Actually that’s the only exception. All other kinds of ACF fields (used for pages, custom post types, etc) can be translated with WPML soon after completing a few basic steps in WPML settings for ACF.
Yes, if you select the “The same fields for languages” mode, WPML will sync your ACF data between languages.

I want to add French to my client’s site, specifically for post and page content, plus menu labels of course. She has already supplied French content. It is deliberately not a straight translation, as for cultural reasons there may be more or less content in the French version. Both the English and French content are likely to get updated in future. I’ll need to maintain a dev and a prod version of the same site for some time. Is the best approach to choose automatic translation and then use the review feature to get started? What impact does that have on future content. Should I be approaching this in a different manner.

Yes, you can use the review feature. Please note that you can always make manual edits to automatic translation, with and without the review option turned on. If your menu uses custom labels, you might need to translate these manually.
What I don’t understand from your description is this piece: “She has already supplied French content.” If the site is English and English the default language of your site and your site doesn’t use WPML yet, how is this possible? I think you can have a mixed content now (English and French) and this is not good. Before you start using WPML your site content must be in only one language and the other languages will be added with WPML.

you need one license key per WordPress installation (not per (sub)domain), so in your case the Multilingual CMS license won’t suffice (it can be used only on 3 production sites). You will need the Agency license but you can get started with the Multilingual CMS package and upgrade to the Agency one later for the difference in the purchase price.

You should at least deactivate TranslatePress before you install WPML. Otherwise those two may conflict.
If you want to translate your site manually, you can consider the Blog package ($39). If you want to speed up your translation process with automatic translation, then you must buy the CMS plan.

Thank you for your interest in WPML. Let me explain. It’s not WPML that aligns the elements of our layouts to make them RTL-ready. In general, your theme and plugins need to be RTL-ready and as soon as they are, the texts you translate with WPML will be properly displayed/aligned in Arabic. My understanding is that in your case instead of using RTL-ready theme, you use something else (Falang) to help you solve this RTL alignment problem. I don’t have any information how WPML will work with Falang so you would need to it. You can buy WPML keeping our refund policy in mind and install it on test site to see how it works in your setup.

You could install our WooCommerce Multilingual but without WPML, it will only provide you the currency feature. In order to translate your WooCommerce website, you would need our Multilingual CMS package and, of course, WPML. However, you can’t have Polylang and WPML installed in the same WordPress setup.

You need to add so-called custom languages as explained here:https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/editing-wpmls-languages-table/ The best option is to do so when using the WPML wizard (as shown on the first image in the page I’ve linked).

If you download the WPML plugins to your drive or install on your websites, you can use and keep them for as long as you want, even if you WPML subscription expires. Renewals are optional but if you cancel you subscription you won’t be getting plugin updates and you won’t be able to ask for help on our support forum.
I’m planning to buy this plugin for my website primarily for translation into Persian. I read the plugin distorts the layout of the website when translated into Persian. Is it true? Need clarification please.

In general, adding a specific language with WPML doesn’t distort the layout but if your theme is not prepared to handle some languages, especially Right To Left languages, you might end up with a distorted layout indeed.
