  1. Hello, I wanted to ask the following:
    Can I set up a single WPML installation with WordPress multisite in the following way:
    – the fortest.com site has 3 languages ​​in subdirectories fortest.com/en, fortest.com/ru and fortest.com/jp

    – the fortest.it site only Italian language in fortest.it/it
    – the fortest.fr site only French language in fortest.fr/fr
    – the fortest.es site only Spanish language in fortest.es/es
    – the fortest.net.br site only Portuguese language in fortest.net.br/pt
    – the fortest.de site only German language in fortest.de/de
    – the fortest.cn site only Chinese language in fortest.cn/cn
    – the fortest.pl site only Polish language in fortest.pl/pl

  2. Thanks again for answering our questions so far!

    We have just a couple more:

    1) Let’s say that we successfully translate our website into 4 languages (English (default), Spanish, French and German) – and then we decide to update our homepage to add a new section with text. I assume that once we update the English page, we can then prompt WPML to translate ONLY the newly added text? Is that correct? – I just want to make sure we wouldn’t have to re-translate the entire page after making one addition like that.

    2) Also, when we do the above, that wouldn’t create another duplicate page, would it? I assume it would take the existing duplicate page for Spanish, French or German and update that to add the newly translated text from the English page. Is that correct?

    3) Is there a way to make the website AUTOMATICALLY translate for the visitor? OR, is it something that the visitor has to select before it will translate?

    • Hello Ryan,

      1. Correct — WPML only translates the parts that have changed. You don’t need to prompt WPML manually. Simply click the “Update Translation” icon, or if you’re using bulk translation, re-run the translation. WPML will automatically detect and process only the changed content.

      2. No, another copy won’t be created. The existing translation will be used, with new content added or existing content updated as needed.

      3. Yes, that’s also possible. You can enable the “Translate Everything Automatically” option. With this setting, everything is translated automatically — no manual action required. When a new post, page, or product is added to your site, it will be translated immediately. Similarly, any updates made to existing content will be translated automatically and instantly.

  4. Our requirement: Translation plug-in based on absolute-MUST minimum business requirements-
    1) Automatically translate the content published in English along with slug into spanish. Should be able to ad spanish lang in slug like /es/slug
    2) Each automatically translated Spanish language page MUST be published to Spanish-language URL – that is indexable, crawlable, and be part of the xml sitemap (yoast)
    3) Manually overwrite certain words (that was automatically translated) for grammar and usage based on client’s preference. The automatically translated pages should still have option to be edited manually.
    4) Should be elementor compatible

      WPML supports everything you are asking about:
      1. This is possible and works out of the box. Adding /es/ is the default setting for languages (the so-called language in directory option). WPML translates slugs too.
      2. This is possible too. You need to add the WPML SEO plugin when adding WPML plugins. You will see this plugin on your list of WPML plugins. After adding the OTGS installer plugin please go to Plugins > Add new > Commercial tab and locate the WPML SEO plugin and activate it too.
      3. Possible too. You can make any edits to automatic translations.
      4. WPML is compatible with ELementor and Elementor Pro. Do you use any Elementor addons with some additional Elementor widgets?

    I am a web developer. I use WordPress and Elementor for website development. If I buy the unlimited version, How many domains could I install and use? I mean, is it possible to use it for different domains in different hosts for one year? What are limitations? What are the positive points and privileges?

    Why does the calculator show a price of 362.30 € for 1,001,000 credits, but the purchase is only possible for 800 €?

    • Hello,
      there are two types of credits:
      1. Pay as Go You (PAYG) credits – these are cheaper but to use this method you need to provide your payment card. The calculator represent the PAYG credits.
      2. Pre-paid credits – you buy these in packages. These are represented by the boxes at the bottom of the screen: the Buy Prepaid Packages section.

    Does the renewal of the Multilingual CMS plan subscription make 90,000 credits available for use again, or are those credits only granted once during the initial subscription?

      Every time you renew WPML, we refill your translation credit balance up to a certain limit:

      Multilingual CMS – up to 90,000 credits
      Multilingual Agency – up to 180,000 credits
      For example, if you have a Multilingual CMS plan with 33,000 credits left, you’ll receive 57,000 credits when you renew WPML.

    Though our website is on one domain (i.e. http://www.mywebsite.com), the website traffic is load-balanced on two different servers. Each of the server has its own WordPress installation with their own domains (i.e. serve1.mywebsite.com and server2.mywebsite.com).

    Our question is, do we need to buy the Multilingual Agency version of the WPML plugin or can we buy the Multilingual CMS version?

      It is important to know that WPML does NOT run in a distributed fashion across separate WordPress instances. Our plugin expects that multilingual content reside in the same WordPress installation/database. While we support translations within WordPress multisite networks, the database itself must be singular and unique.

      From what you write, it does not seem that our plugin is the right fit for your use case which is distributed across WordPress databases and separate servers.

      I hope I have understood your requirements correctly and that I have explained clearly our architectural limitations.

      I think you are referring to a notice to renew the WPML CMS license which is a **yearly subscription**. This is apart and separate from purchasing and using credits for ongoing translations.

      Here is a summary of what renewals provides:

      You can continue to translate and use the plugin without renewing as well but there are restrictions:

      If you don’t renew your subscription after a year, you can still log into your account, however, you will:

      1. Stop receiving plugin updates
      2. Not have access to support
      3. Not be able to register new sites even if you still have available slots

      You can continue to use WPML, however, please note that WordPress and other plugins get updated all the time. As your site will be running an older version of WPML, you might run into different compatibility issues.

    We basically want Google to index our Russian translated pages and show the Russian translated pages in its search results on google.ae

    Since these pages are generated dynamically, do they get permanently indexed by Google and appear in its search results?

    Static pages are easily indexed by Google but what about these dynamically generated pages?

    I currently have a multisite setup in subdirectories as follows:
    – example.com/fr/ – French language for the french market
    – example.com/es/ – Spanish language for the Spanish market
    – example.com – English language, as an x default
    – example.com/se/ – Swedish language for a Swedish audience

    I want to have a multilingual solution implemented for just particular parts of the multisite, so that most websites stay exactly as they are, but certain non-english language websites get a multilingual option. E.g.:
    – example.com/se/en/ – English language for a Swedish audience

    Is this possible with the tool?

    And separately, if it is, would users be able to search from the index of a site that has WPML working and find search results from across both English language and the local language?

      I am assuming that your subsites each have different unrelated content.
      If your setup has different content for each “language market”, then your approach may not be supported if you use language codes for the site subdirectories.
      Let me clarify.
      – example.com/fr/ has content relating to a ski shop
      – example.com is a cooking school

      In this case, if you wanted to implement an FR version of the cooking school, the permalink for the FR version of example.com would become “example.com/fr” which conflicts with the root directory for the French subsite of your network (ie. the ski shop)

      What we normally expect and fully support is that you would NOT implement language codes for site names but have something like:
      exmaple.com/ski-the-alps/fr
      example.com/ski-the-alps/en
      example.com/cooking-school
      example.com/cooking-school/fr

      In the example you provided for English speaking visitors in the Swedish market, the resulting permalink could then be: example.com/swedish/en

      I would also take this opportunity to suggest that you also activate WPML at the site node level and not at the network level.

      You also asked:

      Again, I am assuming that each subsite has DIFFERENT unrelated content. In this case, the answer is normally “no” because most people do not want to confuse their site visitors with mixed language search results. This is done via WordPress filters. There are use cases where this behaviour is not desired and the mixed results **IS** wanted…then you would have to turn off the filter that separates out results of the SQL query by active language code.

      The short answer is: it’s up to you but may require some small PHP customisation.

      I hope I was able to answer your question.

      In the case that I misunderstood your question and your sub-sites are related storing different language versions of the exact same content. then you are looking for WPML to only switch between these pre-exiting language versions, I would suggest that you consider merging your content into a single site by exporting/importing the existing content taking note to import with the language code of the content. In this case, your site becomes a normal WPML installation with language versions residing in sub-directories of a single domain.

  14. We recently restored our website due to a system crash. After the restoration, we encountered an issue with the OTGS Installer. A message appears indicating that the OTGS Installer cannot function due to a missing PHP component: cURL.

    “OTGS Installer, responsible for receiving automated updates for WPML and Toolset, requires the following PHP component(s) in order to function:cURL”

    We would like to ask:
    – Is it still possible to continue using our previous WPML license for this restored site without having to repurchase it?
    – What steps should we take to fix the OTGS Installer error related to cURL?
    – Could this issue be related to server configuration after restoration?

  15. Hi,
    I have a multilanguage woocommerce installation. I have ready to import in one file per language (7 languages) all product details, category names, product tags, taxonomies, image names, in short, every possible product details are in my csv files which I want to import via WP All Import, which does not need to be translated but mapped while importing to all other same product translations to be able to switch between the languages.
    I need only to translate the pages and taxonomie names in all languages.
    Is this possible with WPML? Is there any document or furrther information about this constellation, maybe a example? What do I have to do to map all languages?

    If I understand correctly then, I could implement WPML on just one sub-site (e.g. example.com/se/) and have a WPML language subdirectory from this just for the alternative language (e.g. example.com/se/en/ – for english on Swedish website?). So long as it is isolated to the sub-site (and not implemented at the network level, then this should not cause problems)?

    It would be a conflict to try and implement a language variation on the root because of the fact that there would already be subdirectory variations created by the multisite network, not the WPML?

      Yes – HOWEVER, as I described before – it is not recommended to have two language subdirectories and may not even be supported. Having WPML activated at the sub-site allows you to troubleshoot and manage WPML plugin per site without interrupting the other sites.

      WPML will create language subdirectories. As I described before, if you have example.com and you translate this to fr, the permalink for the french version of that site is example.com/fr. If you already have example.com/fr pointing to A DIFFERENT site, this will confuse everything. Please avoid having subsites names with a language code. You can change “fr” to “french” or try the actual name of the site like “ski-coucheval” (I’ve invented this name) but you cannot/should not have example.com/fr/en. This is not recommended.

  17. Sorry for the delayed response, I’ve been busy and then on retreat. 
    Sorry if these questions seem basic or redundant, but I volunteer at a religious 501c3 origination and costs are something we need to consider for any investments. Our website has 300 pages, 50 blog posts, 250 event pages plus store pages; so its pretty large.

    So, from reading the link provided it seems that an initial  translation into two languages, regardless of the number of words, is free if I buy the Auto translation along with WPML.  Is that correct?  Then there is the Pay-As-You-Go option listed if more languages are needed. Correct?

      No, this is not a correct understanding. You are “gifted” a starting credit balance for automatic translation. How far this goes to translate your site content depends on the number of words and the machine translation engine that you choose. After the “free” credits are exhausted, you will then have to choose a credit package that meets your needs to continue translating automatically.

      You can choose between Pay-as-you-Go or Pre-Paid credits.

  18. Can this plugin help me translate my WooCommerce products? I have many categories but only want to translate one or two of them. Is it possible?

      You can choose which taxonomies to translate but you need to consider how your filters will work. It may be that you will need to duplicate the categories to other languages so that your product search filters work as they should.
