hi Amir, i have install the wmpl plugins, but the i got the warning message said: “WPML cannot create the database tables! Make sure that your mysql user has the CREATE privilege” what is that mean?
WPML needs to create several new tables to store language information. You need to run the site with a DB user that has enough privileges to create database tables.
there is a new funcion setup language in my wp dashboard, but when i click it, a page come out said “cannot loading plugins/menu/languages.php.” what happened????
I wish to translate our not for profit website into Spanish. All of the posts on my site include links to Vimeo videos. These videos have voiceovers which will also be translated resulting in new video link urls for the Spanish version of the site. Can I manually change the content of the posts for each language translation so I can use different web links for the video?
We work with WooThemes developers regularly. They write their themes to be WPML-compatible and we help them with whatever is needed. We haven’t tested this specific theme, but it should be fine. All their themes run on the same framework which works with WPML.
WPML includes browser language detection, which can automatically send people to the homepage in their language. If you want to create a separate landing page for language selection, it’s technically possible. You can do that by either turning your homepage into that landing page or creating a different page and redirecting first-time visitors to it. Search engines don’t like that too much.
I have a WordPress Multisite (mainpage only in one language, but one of the child blogs will be multilanguage so probably wisest to install WPML only for that blog and not all over the network if it’s not needed everywhere?). Would the blog version be enough for this one blog, or do I need the CMS package? I just need to translate blog posts, blog menu, pages and some sidebar/footer content (= text widgets).
If you need to translate widgets, you’ll need the complete Multilingual CMS package. It includes WPML’s String Translation module, which translates widgets and other texts that don’t belong to a specific post.
You can install WPML as a network plugin, or per child blog.
I am developing a site for my son’s multilingual elementary school. We will have pages in English that we will want to translate to Spanish. However, I don’t want just auto translation. We have skilled translators at the school who can translate.
Will this plugin allow us to have the same pages and auto and/or manually translated text of the same pages, or do we have set up duplicate content of all the pages to get control over the translation? I’m just curious about how this all works on the backend.
OK so I probably need to upgrade to CMS for this problem:
1. Well as you earlier said, widgets can only be translated with CMS package. Does this mean I can after upgrade have separate things in the sidebar for separate languages? Because now it’s the same sidebar for all languages, doesn’t matter if I change the language in top bar and try to modify a new sidebar for that language – same widgets for all languages.
2. I use Detube theme (http://demo.dedepress.com/detube-news/). The categories don’t work correctly – if I modify the Home page and choose from what category it should grab the posts, it displays categories in drop in the right language, but whenever I save one Home page (for english page I want it to grab 6 posts from category “Cars” and click save, then I go to Swedish page and set up the Swedish home page to grab them from “Bilar” etc – they are by the way “connected” in the category section = I made translations), the two other versions in other languages get fcked up so to say… I don’t know if you’re familiar with Detube – not even sure if it’s actually WPML compatible…?
1. You should keep using the same widgets in all languages. The String Translation module will allow you to translate the titles of the widgets and also the content of text widgets. Most other widgets will display content per the current language.
2. I’m not familiar with that theme. We have a very active theme-compatibility program, in which we work together with theme authors to check for compatibility issues and resolve them. WPML works a little differently. You should install only one WordPress instance in the root directory. WPML will create the virtual directories for you.
All languages will come from the same WordPress installation and database, but on different URLs.
It means that your account will expire and you will not be able to download newer versions or get support. The plugins that you have downloaded will not stop working in any case.

I do not know how any of the translator programmes work, so I would appreciate if you could help with the following:
– is there an automatic or a manual translation function?
– how do I translate pages? Will there be a separate page in the second language?
– is it possible to translate the slider captions, the navigation menus, the sidebar and foother widgets?
– I wish to use the WP dashboard in English, but all my pages for now are in Hungarian. Is such a setting possible?

1. WPML doesn’t translate content for you. It allows you to write content in multiple languages.
2. Content in different languages will be stored in different pages. Translations are all linked together.
3. Translating sliders really depends on how the slider was built. If the slider uses custom fields, it show translate smoothly. If texts are hard-coded in the slider, it would be difficult to translate.
4. You can choose any language that you prefer for the WP administration. In fact, different users in the site can each set their own admin language.

Don’t worry. Best is to get the theme author to work with us on this. Our support people handle this very efficiently and they can help the theme author make the theme multilingual quickly.
I am recommending this plugin to a client however I don’t know if its compatible with their wp theme as its a custom theme with static pages and hardcoded links.
How long does it take to test compatibility I have to estimate my time?
If there are issues that you already know, I suggest to handle them in the theme. It’s pretty easy to turn hard-coded links to multilingual links. Also, you should definitely wrap any static texts with gettext calls.
We have started working with AppThemes team about 2 weeks ago, reviewing compatibility. So far, we see problems that prevent ClassiPress from running multilingual sites.
These issues appear big, but handling them is pretty simple. We reported the issues to AppThemes team and we will work with them to resolve them all.

The content for each page has already been written out in each language, they just want the correct page to display depending on the user’s browser language.
I’m assuming this is totally doable with WPML, I’m just wondering whether or not I need multilingual cms to accomplish this, or if multilingual blog is enough. Also, if I did go with multilingual blog, can I upgrade without buying a new license?

For complete translation management you should probably get the full CMS version. If you buy the minimal Blog version, you can upgrade at any time later and pay only the difference.
WPML works fine with RTL languages. Please note that much of the work needs to be done in the theme. Many themes come with RTL CSS, but not all. If your theme is designed to display in LTR / RTL, you are all set. If not, the theme author should include this support.

The Blog version translates all WP content and menus. What it doesn’t include is String Translation, which allows you to translate texts that don’t belong to any post. This includes the tagline, widget titles and other non-post texts.
WPML works fine with WP SEO and other SEO plugins. It also runs fine with WP SuperCache, W3TC and other catching plugins. Redirection often causes problems because WPML also needs to modify rewrite rules (to add language information). Redirection plugins and plugins that alter the permalinks don’t work well with WPML.
WPML hardly outputs any of its own HTML to the screen. It adds language information to content, but the bulk of the output will come from your posts and pages. The little HTML that WPML outputs for language switchers is uses compliant strict HTML. It will allow any page to validate without problems.

WPML and WooCommerce generally work fine. There are several small things with product variations that we are looking into. These started after a recent WooCommerce upgrade and we’re working to adapt to them. Otherwise, it looks good and is running on quite a few production sites.

Each directory will have its own wordpress installation (database and theme).

I would like to buy the cms version using PayPal but using the funds already held inside my paypal account (not credit card). This means I just need an email of yours to choose “send money” from within paypal and then it sends it to you. Please advise an email so I can pay that way. Thanks.

I develop websites in WordPress and WooCommerce and have become interested in using WPML for making multilingual webshops. However, I would prefer not to buy the plugin, unless it suits my needs and I have tried it out first.
Would it be possible to get a trial version of the plugin, so I can test it out and see if it suits my needs?

WPML and WooCommerce generally work fine. There are several small things with product variations that we are looking into. These started after a recent WooCommerce upgrade and we’re working to adapt to them. Otherwise, it looks good and is running on quite a few production sites.
