We’ve got a client that wants to update/migrate their site. Currently it’s based on WP 3.3.1 (PHP5.2.4) using qTranslate for internationalisation.
We understand that the path to achieve a successful migration to your technology is by using a plugin but in order to preserve the previous posts in different languages, we need to setup WPML first.
Do you have a compatible version for such requirements so we can transform the previous posts on database to then purchase a license of the current version of WPML?
When you buy WPML you also have access to all previous versions of WPML (you will find them in your WPML account under download). We recommend installing WPML on the most recent version of WordPress.
If you have any in-depth technical questions, best would be to create a ticket in our support forum before starting your migration process or create a copy of your site (the Duplicator plugin is great for it) and run the process on the copy first.
Would like to know if it’s possible to first purchase the Multilingual CMS at $79 before upgrading to the Lifetime license at $195 by paying the difference?
E.g. if we have used and renewed the Multilingual CMS for 1 year ($79 + $39 = $118), can we pay the difference of $195 – $118 = $77 to upgrade to Lifetime?
Hello Jim,
yes, you can start with the cheaper plan and the upgrade for the difference in purchase price. But please note that this is how it works now. In the near future we won’t the Lifetime option. Of course this doesn’t apply to users who already bought this package.
I have read that WPML is not compatible with Smart Coupons

I am looking to use WPML for the first time and have a few questions.
1) In WPML are you able to setup custom words for translation that can be used as short codes (or similar) in templates?
2) Is there a short code for the language switcher so you can place anywhere in your templates?
3) Is there a breadcrumb plugin that will automatically pick up on and display the translated page hierarchy in a breadcrumb?
4) Does Flatsome’s UX Builder fall into the “Translating content created with page builders” or am I best to build in UX Builder as I normally would for each page?
5) Can I use WPML with WordPress Multisites where there are 5 sites total but only 2 require WPML?
6) And on the 2 WPML multisites can I have a different number of translations on each? English, French and German on site A, and then English, Chinese and Arabic on site B?

WPML works great with the SEO Yoast plugin, which provides breadcrumbs

I’m afraid not. I’m not sure if even the theme itself is compatible with WPML. Let me double check with our developers from the Compatibility Team.

If you have a way to install/activte a WordPress plugin only in some of your sites, then yes. WPML is another WordPress plugin.
6) And on the 2 WPML multisites can I have a different number of translations on each? English, French and German on site A, and then English, Chinese and Arabic on site B?
Yes, that’s possible.
If these elements come from your theme, and that theme is compatible with WPML, you will be able to translate such elements using WPML. Unfortunately the Flatsome Theme is not compatible. I asked our developers from the COmpatibility Team and they have been trying to make it compatible but this is not possible without the cooperation with the theme author and they say that the theme author is not replying.
Hi, in your documentation I can’t find clear information about my question. I would like to know if it is possible to create a page only for a secondary language without creating it in the original language?
So this page would be available only for one secondary language and not displayed on original language or other secondary languages – Is it possible?

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but our site was built years ago and has changed developers many times. Now we would like to update the plugin, but we receive the error message site’s registration is not valid. Register wpml for this site. We do not have credentials for the account and the email probably goes to a former developer who will not share the information. Is there a way to verify ownership of the domain and gain access to the account?

Yes, that the right place to ask such questions or you can also use this form. We can check the status of your WPML account only if it was you who bought WPML from us (not your developer) which means you have the order number and something that proves WPML was bought by you (an invoice with your company name for example). Please note that even it turns out that you are the owner of the WPML subscription, your subscription might have expired – your status depends on what kind of subscription you bought: Blog, CMS or Lifetime.
If your developer bought WPML with his own email address, he/she used his/her credit card and we invoiced him/her, then you need to buy a new WPML account.
We are redoing our site and will likely have custom templates so I assume WPML will work. Right now we have 2 separate sites – one for English and one for French Canada. If we use WPML and have one site, what will the user experience be? We only want certain pages translated and showing up for the French site so how will this get managed from a user perspective?

thank you for your interest in WPML. WPML allows you to translate only some of your pages, no problem. If a user open a page in English and this page wasn’t translated to French (or vice versa) they won’t be able to switch to the French using the language switcher. Or you can show them the language switcher with both languages but they will be redirected to the homepage of the second language for pages/posts without translations. In WPML settings you set up what should happen for such cases.

yes, if you don’t want to translate your products, you use enable a global option asking to display the original post if the translation doesn’t exist. But in that case I’m not sure what is the purpose of having a multilingual store.
Hello Dennis, I’m sorry but indeed I don’t follow. What do you mean by translating products? If translating a product means making it available in another language but with a different product title and description (in that new language), how you think this is possible to archive in WordPress without creating a new post?
When you translate your posts and pages in WPML, WPML will create a new post/page for it, which means a new record in the database will be created, plus one more where we store the relationship which post is a translation of which one.
Please note that you create a multilingual store for a reason, most likely to attract new customers. And they expect to see the products in their language. One way to achieve it is to install a new WordPress site and manage these two sites (or more, depending how many languages you want to have) in two separate WordPress sites.
If you need a convenient way to edit your products in multiple languages from one WordPress and at the same time have your site well optimized for search engines, you need to have your products available under separate URLs:
Our customer wants a multilingual webshop, but the products they sell in the Dutch, German and English shop are the same products.
So for all languages the product, the image, price, the SKU etc. are the same. The only thing that is different is that the texts have been translated. So the URL, the title and the description.
For example, one product is a poster with hearts.

And so we are looking for a plugin that can create separate structures (urls) for three shops. But try to avoid having 3x work with a price change.
At the moment the customer has 600 products. If we are going to run the shop in 2 other languages, it means that they do not have 600 products but 1800 products.
What makes the backend unclear. And the shop a lot slower.
The product that they have to take off the shelf is always the same, only the shipment must go to another country 🙂
1. If you want to translate your product title and description there is no other way than creating a new post for each product. So yes, if you have 3 languages and 600 products you will end up with 1800 products.
2. When you translate products with WPML the price, SKU and stock info will be copied from the original products so you don’t need to do anything.
3. About performance. You won’t see any significant difference on the front-end. Because we are loading only product(s) from one language. In the backend you will see a difference since you can see both versions and there are more database queries to be done.

For example I have Russian and English version of the same page. I leave comment on English page and I want the same comment to be displayed on Russian version. And vice versa.
Does WPML supports this functionality?

translated posts are separate posts in WPML. By default WPML displays comments that belong to the post. I cannot see a reason why somebody would need to mix comments from different languages but maybe there is a way. I don’t know. I need to check with our developers. You are the first one asking such a question. Please give me a while to find out.

My usecase if following. I’m working on international photographers community web-site and most of the articles will be just photos. So, it will be handy to collect all comments together, otherwise you have to jump from page to page to read them all.

there is a number of way how you would translate your page. The most common way to translate is to go to a page/post and press “translate it”. WordPress will create a new post/page and you need to enter the translation.
If you would like to export your posts and pages and translate it outside your WordPress, that also possible. You can export your content to the so called XLIFF files. Just to be certain – when you say that we can export the content of a page/blog to the so called XLIFF files, do you also mean the entire website including the menu, header, footer and metadata?

My client currently has two up-to-date WordPress sites. One in English and one in Spanish. We are wanting to merge the two together, i.e. merging the Spanish site into the English site. Is there a (fairly) quick or easy way to “migrate” existing content from the Spanish site to the English site, or will I need to recreate/go through page by page?
I want certain products to be displayed in specific currency (no need for multiple currency selection). So most products are shown in USD and paid for in USD, then a specific product I can change to say this product is $XYZ in CAD and then paid for in CAD via Stripe or PayPal.
Can this functionality be achieved with your currency plugin?

I currently have Qtranslate X but want to move to WPMP as I’ve heard it’s better and many things of my website could not be translated with the Qtranslate plugin. The thing is that when I deactivate the Qtranslate plugin it messes up my website, I read it’s because that plugin joins all languages in a single post. Either way, If I buy WPML could you help me with this?
I just used the Qtranslate plugin to translate the menus on the website but not the content itself as I was not worried about making my site bilingual, so maybe that will make things easier.

I currently use Thrive Architect via Thrive Themes to build my sites. It is a drag and drop editor. I do not see that drag and drop site builder listed on your site.
Does that mean it won’t work? Or is there a way that I can just build each page on the site twice (once for each language) using Thrive Architect and just configure things to know what page to go to based on what language a user selects?
I”m still a bit confused but let me ask you a quick question should help me understand.
If you forget about Thrive for a second and just take this as a general question. If I build each page twice, will your plugin then allow me to link them somehow so that every-time someone gets to that page, WPML will know weather to show the page in language 1 vs language 2?
When you translated regular posts and pages and you click “trasnlate” WPML creates a new post/page in a new language (the language you will choose) and that page will be already connected with your primary language. You need to insert the translation.
It’s more of a “what you see is what you get” editor.
That’s why I was thinking maybe there is a way where I have a page, then once the page is done I could duplicate the page and have that duplicated page in the new language.
Then it would not matter if Thrive was technicaly “compatible” or not because it would simply be two pages.
From your response, it looks like I can have two pages that are “linked”. One in English and one in Spanish.
yes, if a page builder is not integrated with WPML you can do the following:
1. When you will be translating a page, use the “Duplicate” button instead of “Translate”.
A copy will be created, including the part you have built using the page builder. This way you don’t need to recreate the content from scratch.
2. Click “translate separately” to disconnect from the other original page.
3. Update the content of your translation – translate the strings that needs to be translated.
Our supporters tell me that there might be some exotic page builders (rarely used) which won’t work. I would like to know if the plugin is still available to use on a completely new website. If I want to re-create a website under different domain, will I be allowed to use the purchased (I am talking USD 195 one) plugin on the new website?

For question (1) so how would I go about translating something that is part of the template?
For example if there was a Call Now in the top right of screen that was part of the header?

I think we have a misunderstanding here :).
We would like to have an multilangual store, and translate the 600 products.
But we don’t want duplicated products in our WooCommerce store.
Because if we change a price, we will have to edit 3 products instead of just 1… or 1800 instead of 600 :).

It allows you to send your content (posts, pages, other strings) to one of the professional translation services we are integrated with. You will find the list here. I just want to make sure that the basic functionality to make totally new language versions of websites by extracting all text strings is possible. That is, export, then translate, then start a new language version, and then import the translated text – finished.

there is a number of way how you would translate your page. The most common way to translate is to go to a page/post and press “translate it”. WordPress will create a new post/page and you need to enter the translation.
If you would like to export your posts and pages and translate it outside your WordPress, that also possible. You can export your content to the so called XLIFF files. You can also send your content to professional translation services directly from your WordPress. You can also use the WPML All Import plugin : https://wpml.org/documentation/related-projects/wpml-all-import-plugin-website-import-with-wpml/
Just to be certain – when you say that we can export the content of a page/blog to the so called XLIFF files, do you also mean the entire website including the menu, header, footer and metadata?
What you translate in WPML are strings. And yes, strings coming from menu, header and footer, meta data can be also translated via XLIFF files.

My client currently has two up-to-date WordPress sites. One in English and one in Spanish. We are wanting to merge the two together, i.e. merging the Spanish site into the English site. Is there a (fairly) quick or easy way to “migrate” existing content from the Spanish site to the English site, or will I need to recreate/go through page by page?

You can use the WPML All Import plugin (you will find it in the WPML CMS or Lifetime package). It won’t do the whole work for you but at least the dirty part

I use Thrive Architect by thrive themes to build all my websites, as I don’t know how to code.
Can I still use this plugin to create a multi language site?
I was not sure what themes WPML is compatible with and I’d rather not change to a new drag and drop editor.

I want certain products to be displayed in specific currency (no need for multiple currency selection). So most products are shown in USD and paid for in USD, then a specific product I can change to say this product is $XYZ in CAD and then paid for in CAD via Stripe or PayPal.

I currently have Qtranslate X but want to move to WPMP as I’ve heard it’s better and many things of my website could not be translated with the Qtranslate plugin. The thing is that when I deactivate the Qtranslate plugin it messes up my website, I read it’s because that plugin joins all languages in a single post. Either way, If I buy WPML could you help me with this?
I just used the Qtranslate plugin to translate the menus on the website but not the content itself as I was not worried about making my site bilingual, so maybe that will make things easier.

I currently use Thrive Architect via Thrive Themes to build my sites. It is a drag and drop editor. I do not see that drag and drop site builder listed on your site.
Does that mean it won’t work? Or is there a way that I can just build each page on the site twice (once for each language) using Thrive Architect and just configure things to know what page to go to based on what language a user selects?

If you forget about Thrive for a second and just take this as a general question. If I build each page twice, will your plugin then allow me to link them somehow so that every-time someone gets to that page, WPML will know weather to show the page in language 1 vs language 2?

When you translated regular posts and pages and you click “trasnlate” WPML creates a new post/page in a new language (the language you will choose) and that page will be already connected with your primary language. You need to insert the translation.
No, Thrive is not based on short codes.
It’s more of a “what you see is what you get” editor.
That’s why I was thinking maybe there is a way where I have a page, then once the page is done I could duplicate the page and have that duplicated page in the new language.
Then it would not matter if Thrive was technicaly “compatible” or not because it would simply be two pages.
From your response, it looks like I can have two pages that are “linked”. One in English and one in Spanish.
Is that correct?

yes, if a page builder is not integrated with WPML you can do the following:
1. When you will be translating a page, use the “Duplicate” button instead of “Translate”.
A copy will be created, including the part you have built using the page builder. This way you don’t need to recreate the content from scratch.
2. Click “translate separately” to disconnect from the other original page.
3. Update the content of your translation – translate the strings that needs to be translated.
Our supporters tell me that there might be some exotic page builders (rarely used) which won’t work. So I’m not 100% sure if the page builder you have will work smoothly but this is why we have the refund policy – you will be able to test WPML for 30 days without any risk.
