  1. Hello, I have 2 questions.

    1) Can I assign multiple languages to a user’s profile?
    2) Is there a way to customise the pages/posts/media/menu so a user only sees their own language content? We don’t want other users with other languages seeing pages/media etc for languages that are not their own. If WPML doesn’t support this do you recommend another plugin that would works well with WPML to achieve this?

  2. I am very confused because I see on the DeepL website that they offer a free API with 500,000 characters per month, and Google also provides free translation characters. Do I need to purchase WPML credits as well?

    • Hello,
      You cannot use your own DeepL API key when you use WPML. WPML communicates with DeepL but on top of this does pre- and post- processing of the translations received from DeepL to be better adjusted for WordPress sites. When purchasing the Multilingual CMS plugin you will receive 90 000 translation credits that will allow you to translate 45 000 words with DeepL. If you need more credits, here are your options: https://wpml.org/documentation/automatic-translation/automatic-translation-pricing/ The calculator from the bottom of the page will help you estimate how much you will pay for your set of languages and the number of words.

  3. Hello, we are starting small with translating our site. We plan on launching just a handful of pages in German in January. These pages will be pre-translated. Our ultimate goal is to have a user be redirected to the German homepage if their browser language is set to German. This will be identified by “/de” in the URL. Is this something WPML can help with?

  4. We’re just in the process of creating this website … the owner wants us to translate to spanish. They also want to have blogs so they can write blog articles weekly.

    I know we don’t have a problem with the current website if we buy the CMS version … we will be well under the 90,000 credits.

    Two questions … when a now blog post is published … will it automatically translate to Spanish or do we need to “initiate” that translation?

    If the client writes too many blog articles and we exceed the 90,000 credits will we be notified in some way so we can purchase extra credits so that their new articles can be translated?

      This depends on your WPML settings. Both options are possible. Let me explain.
      When you set up WPML you will be offered two modes: “Translate Everything Automatically” and “Let me choose what to translate”. If you want to initiate the translation you need to select the “Let me choose what to translate” mode. You can change this mode in your WPML settings at any time.
      With “Let me choose what to translate” mode selected, here’s how you translate. You can click on the “plus” icon for each of your blog post or you can translate from within the Translation Management screen.
      If you run out of the free credits, you can use buy more credits and this page explains your options: https://wpml.org/documentation/automatic-translation/automatic-translation-pricing/ At the bottom of this page you will also find an interactive calculator that allows you to estimate how much you will pay.

    I’m thinking about moving from Polylang to WPML as this seems more common used and with less problems when using other plugins. My question is now when I will buy and use it how difficult is the migration and what do I have to do before and once I have used the plugin. We have a lot of pages, Elementor templates and WooCommerce products. Polylang always creates WC products for each language, does WPML do this too and will it use the ones already created.
    So it would be great if you could give me details on how complicated and what the effort would be to migrate to WPML and what steps I would have to do.

    • Hello,
      the best way would be to clear your DB from Polylang and translate everything from scratch using WPML. You can use automatic translations or copy-paste manually from your current resources.
      If you have many pages that have been already translated with Polylang you can also consider using the migration plugin but it has some limitations: https://wpml.org/documentation/migrate-polylang-wpml/ For example, you won’t be able to edit migrated translations in the WPML translation editor.
      Yes, WPML creates separate pages when you translate. This is what is best for SEO.

    We’re looking for multilangual solution location based, but not the browser language. Let me know how better achieve it. and which plan will be best?

    Does it works only as redirection or this can be set in other way?

    How it works if the user let say accessing the page organically, let us say about us page German version but from France, is he automatically redirected to the about us French version?

    Another scenario assumes that a certain page does not have the translation in French. Let us say some one is accessing the German service page from France where is he redirected in this case. Can we setup to be redirected to the French homepage ?

    And how the configuration works in this case?

    Does the server should include GeoIP?

    • The feature works only with redirections. You can also add the language switcher to your website but clients need to click on it.
      The best practice is not to use any redirection features at all. If your site provides good translations, users will get links to translated pages directly when performing their Google search. No, our server doesn’t include GeoIP.

    I’m trying to understand the translation of menus and sub menus and what is the user experience if only certain sections/pages are translated . For instance if I setup a German site , and only translate certain top menus and pages, will these be the only one the German visitor will see (or will they continue to see all the other pages and options in English?)

    • The content of your original language will be accessible to all your users regardless of the fact how many pages you translated and if those translated pages are in the menu. User can use the language switcher to browse your site in other languages but also they will use Google search (the engine) and get direct links to your site. For other languages of your site, your users will see only translated pages.

    So we have a situation where a user on the site would be responsible for say translating/editing content in multiple different languages. Eg, English, German & French. The current site is in Drupal whereby on the user profile the user ticks a checkbox with the languages shown and they inherit the ability to edit/translate content for that language.

    There will be over 20 languages on the site to that user in the example above can only edit, translate content within those 3 languages with no capability to touch any other language.

      WordPress doesn’t provide such options (inheritance).

      WPML itself cannot handle this but you could try the Toolset Access plugin: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/how-to-use-access-plugin-to-create-editors-for-specific-language/

      If you are new to WordPress and WPML, I’d recommend using WPML on a small site to see how it works. Without the Toolset Access plugi at first. You can request a refund within 30 days.

    to understand correct. The migration Plugin can use existing pages and post in both languages but it cannot use the translation files for text that appears somewhere on the site as in checkout or similar.
    So I would have to redo the translations but can keep the posts and pages as they are. Perhaps just tell them what languages they are. Is this correct.

    Is there some Demo Installation where I can see how the system works to understand things better.

  10. We have a Divi website with 5 pages + 1 contact page and the client is translating the content themselves (they are a translation company so..). We have two languages only, portuguese and english. Here are some questions:
    1. Can we buy the blog version?
    2. In the price section it mentions the translation of menus. Does the blog version allows menu translation?
    3. Also in the price section it mentions the translation of footers and headers. Does the blog version has any limitations regarding footers?

      1. Yes, you can. You can upgrade to the Multilingual CMS later for the difference in the purchase price.
      2. If you use a classic theme, the menu will work fine even with the Blog package. It won’t work for FSE (block-based) themes.
      3. Depends on what you have in our footer and how you footer has been built. Did you use any page builder (such as Divi, Elementor, WPBakey) to create your footer?

  12. today there was still a calculator available on this site that calculates number of languages multiplied by the number of words depending on the Automatic translation engine used. Now I am not able to locate it? can you suggest the link?

    • Hello,
      Yes, WPML provides the Automatic Redirect Based on Browser Language feature which is disabled by default. Feel free to enable it in your settings but please note that this feature is not that important as it might seem to be. Soon after your site is available in other languages, the content of your site in those other languages will be added to the Google index and when your potential clients use Google search they will get direct links to individual and relevant pages in the language they are performing their search. This means that the redirection based on the browser is not needed. It’s more importer to make sure your site has the languages switcher (the little thing with list of languages and flags) added to your menu or header.

    We’ve been testing your plugin for a while to see if it’s worth purchasing only to find out that your WPML String Translations Plugin stops the user from entering their Elementor Pro editor, one of the main WordPress editors. Only when disabling WPML String Translations, it works again. Elelentor sais to contact you, your support desk however is unreachable without an account.

    I suggest a very quick fix.

      what you are describing – the WPML String Translations plugin stopping the user from entering their Elementor Pro editor is abnormal and there must be an explanation why this happens and how to fix it. This requires an investigation by someone from our support team. How about the following:
      1. Purchase WPML keeping our 30-day refund policy in mind
      2. Prepare a test site where you can see the problem (hosting providers allow to make a copy of the entire site with a few clicks)
      3. Report this problem on our support forum
      If it turns out that your issue cannot be solved (which I doubt because we have many happy Elementor Pro users), fill our the refund form and we will refund your order.

      hreflang tags are added automatically by WPML. This works both with the Blog and CSM/Agency packages. What you cannot do with the Blog package is translating meta tags and descriptions for popular SEO plugins. For this to work, you need the Multilingual CMS/Agency package.

    Multilingual CMS” or a blog one and work in “Pay-As-You-Go Pricing” mode. The use will be on my school website – 10 – 20 pages per 1000 words, in the future I count with e Commerce. Translation into 2 languages, later maybe into 4 – 5. The site is under development.
    Do I have to buy a yearly license and then switch to “Pay-As-You-Go Pricing” or can I work directly in this mode?
    Can I buy a blog license (Multilingual Blog) to work in “Pay-As-You-Go Pricing”mode and possibly upgrade as needed?
    Or should I buy a license and not use
    “Pay-As-You-Go Pricing” until I need the credits (90.000 credits per year is enough for me).
    I would prefer to work in “Pay-As-You-Go Pricing” mode without the annual fee.

      I understand that you need advice as to what to purchase.

      First, please note the following points keeping in mind that the product subscription and the model of paying for Automatic Translation credits are independent decisions:

      1. you only need to buy/use credits (“Pay-As-You-Go” or “Prepaid”) when using Automatic Translation (machine translation). You can always translate content yourself or through a professional translation service without the consumption of credtis.
      2. Automatic Translation is only available with the CMS subscription
      3. To translate your plugin and/or theme strings as well as any plugin/theme configurable options, you will need the String Translation plugin which is only available with the CMS subscription. The Blog subscription only gives you ability to translate your post content (no support for pagebuilder plugins)
      4. To install our plugin, you will require an active subscption to obtain a site key. After installation, if you do not renew your subscription, you will not lose any translated content. You will only lose the capacity to receive free upgrades and support.
      5. If you do not renew your CMS subscription, you would still be able to use the Pay-as-You-Go plan for translations but you would not be able to purchase more prepaid credits. You can ALWAYS manually translate your content even with an expired subscription.
      6. We only offer the yearly subscription model to purchase our plugins.

      With all these points, it seems to me that you would be best served by purchasing the CMS subscription. Then, if you plan to use Automatic Translation on your site, use the awarded credits carefully to learn how to best use the plugin for your needs. When these “free credits” run out, then activate the Pay-as-you-Go model as needed. If you don’t plan to use Automatic Translation, the free credits won’t serve you in any way…perhaps you could apply them to translate some of your plugin/theme strings.

      I hope this answers your question and clarifies the decision points to consider.

  18. I’m considering purchasing WPML for my website, which is built with the following setup:

    Page Builder: Oxygen Builder
    Meta Box: for Custom Post Type, Relationships and Custom Fields

    I initially started using Polylang but encountered significant issues with translating Meta Box custom fields, which stalled my progress. I’d like to know if it’s possible to migrate the work I’ve done so far to WPML, especially regarding the custom fields and their translations.

    Additionally, I have a few specific concerns:

    Oxygen Builder Compatibility:

    I’ve read about potential issues with template translations not displaying correctly for logged-out visitors. Is this issue fully resolved?
    With Polylang I used Yoast Duplicate Post to duplicate Oxygen templates and manually translated the content. That works fine for me.

    Meta Box Integration:

    Does WPML fully support translating custom fields and custom post type relationships created with Meta Box?
    Can these fields be translated seamlessly, and is there a specific workflow or plugin setup required to ensure compatibility?
