We currently have an English site and 9 seperate non-English sites. The non-English sites are much smaller than the English site, ie a subset of the content.
Our vision longer-term is to connect these sites such that new/edited content on the English site would be translated and used on the non-English sites. But we don’t need to expand these non-English sites to be as big as the English site, ie have all the content from the English site.
We would like to select the subset of English language content that matches what is currently on the non-English sites and have that translated and now “connected” to the English content site, meaning the non-English content would now get the updates to the English content.
But we have a few questions:
1 – because we plan to only translate a subset of the English content, to keep the non-English sites smaller, does the WPML tool allow us to localize the non-English content, e.g. to remove/change links to content outside the subset of content?
2 – and can we keep translating only the changes that affect the subset of the English content, ie not add all new content edits or additions to the non-English sites?
2 – because we have this content already translated, can WPML leverage our existing translation memory to reduce the need to translate everything?

WPML allows you to keep a diffrent set of pages for your original language and for the other languages, no problem here. We provide full flexibility here, which means the following setup is possible:
English (original/primary language): page A, page B, page C
Spanish: page-A, page C
French: page-B, page C
Italian: page-C, page-D (note that page-D doesn’t exist in English, which is also possible with WPML)
If you want to use existing translations for some of your pages, you would need to create these pages in your site in the target language and then manually connect with their equivalents in other languages. Please note that for these pages you cannot use our Advanced Translation Editor and you cannot use automatic translations for these pages. You would need to disable the Advanced Translation Editor on these pages and use the WordPress editor instead. You can use Advanced Translation Editor and automatic translations only for new pages and pages that haven’t been translated yet. The reason is that our translation memory won’t handle the translation mapping for translations that are not coming from WPML.
Here’s the recommended setup for your site:
1. Add all of the languages or only some (you can add more language later)
2. When installing WPML please select “Let me choose what to translate” in the WPML wizard (don’t select “Translate Everything Automatically)
3. Go to WPML > Translation Management and translate a few page automatically to see how it goes.

We don’t provide tools for importing something into the translation memory.
If you want to import existing WordPress posts or pages in one go (and set up a specific language for all of them when importing), you can use the WP All Import plugin with the WPML All Import plugin as explained here. Another option is to use XLIFF files
Of course you can always important your regular posts into your site without setting up the language, as you would do without WPML. Such posts will be assigned to the primary language of your site.
To sum up:
– if you want to use automatic translation and/or edit your translation via the Advanced Translation Editor of WPML – these will work only for new posts/pages and pages that haven’t been translated outside the WPML Advanced Translation Editor
– posts with existing translations will be recognized and managed by WPML but you would need to edit those using the WordPress editor. For those you would need to manually set up the language or assign the language during the import process
.tmx files are Translation Memory exchange files used by translation services and tools to exchange data between Translation Memories.
For example, if you were moving from one translation service to another, you could export a .tmx file from the old service and then import it into the new service to avoid losing all the work you had done in the past.
At present, we are using the Gtranslate plug-in to implement multi-language, but we found that there are problems with the collection of multi-language pages written by Gtranslate. My website is not established by WordPress. Can I use the wpml plug-in?

I am looking for a plugin to set automatic translation in english of a french website. I calculated the website publish around 1 million words per year and calculated the associated cost for DeepL translation. My concern is about already published content, which amount is huge and which we would not necessarily need to translate (it’s a news website). Is there a way to exclude older posts from translation ?
Also, will all the menus and texts beside post contents be translated through DeepL too ?

if you select the “Let me choose what to translate” mode (instead of “Translate Everything Automatically) you can select (in bulk) which specific posts/pages to translate automatically. But please note that if you translated your contact outside WPML, WPML won’t recognize these translations. Menu is automatically synchronised across languages as soon as you translate the pages that make the menu. If you have text strings to translate that don’t belong to the post contents you can translate them manually via the String Translation plugin.
You can use different domains for languages or subdirectories for languages but you cannot mixed both.
So the following setup is possible:
xyz.ch
xyz.de
xyz.en
or this one:
xyz.ch
xyz.ch/fr
xyz.ch/it
but this one is not:
xyz.ch
xyz.ch/de
xyz.ch/fr

– Would we be able to use one license for both multisite installations?
– Does this plugin translate automatically out of the box or do we have to pay extra for a service like DeepL?
– I know there is a return period, but does this plugin have a free version we can test out. We have a custom theme and Gutenberg blocks that I want to test out. Would be easier to try out a free version rather than making the purchase and then realizing it won’t work.

When we don’t have translations for the DE version of this page and we go to the page abc.de/practices/sap-recruitment/, I noticed that WPML opens the page abc.de/practices/sap-recruitment/ in the default language, which is EN. Can we disable this in WPML, and if there is no translation in a given language, will a 404 error appear?

yes, if you set up WPML with different domains for languages you will get ULRs like this abc.en/practices/sap-recruitment/ for your pages in English. If you don’t provide the translation for the German page, you have two options:
a) you can show English content instead, which will result in abc.de/practices/sap-recruitment/ (and the exactly same content as you would get for abc.en/practices/sap-recruitment/)
b) there is no equivalent for German for this page, so yes, 404 error would appear but only in theory because no one will try to access a link that doesn’t exist. In other word, if a page is not translated you won’t see a link to the translation of this page in your language switcher
If you want to go with option a, you have two ways to achieve this:
1. Use the duplicate option for individual pages
2. Use the “fallback to original” option for the entire post type (pages, posts, any custom post type)

Thank you for your interest in WPML. I’m not sure I full understand what you want to do so let me ask a few questions. Every website has its default language, this is the language of your WordPress. (If you are not sure what is the default language of your site, please go to WordPress > Settings > Site Language.) I presume your language is Italian now. You say that you want to delete Italian. In theory it’s possible but every site needs to have a default language and this is importnat for WPML too. Because WPML will check your site’s default language and make it the so-called primary language for your WPML settings. Then, you will translate from this default language to other languages using WPML. If you plan to use automatic translation, it’s possible only to translate from the primary language to other languages, not the other way around.
Please answer the following questions, so I can give you a better reply for your case:
1. Does your site have posts and pages in Italian now?
2. Do you want to translate these pages to other languages from Italian to English and French automatically?
3. After finishing the translations, what do you want to do with Italian pages and posts? Delete them completely from your site?
4. What is the new primary language you want to set up after removing Italian? English? French?
I have an amazon affiliate gadgets review website. Right now the website is in English. I have recently started using content egg pro to show prices in local currencies which has had a huge impact on CTR and conversions.
My question is. Is it possible that using WPML plugin the website detects the user’s location and shows them a translated page automatically. For e.g one user is from USA they will be shown the page in English(which the site is in at the moment) while the other user is from Turkey, Brazil. Is it possible the user is shown or redirected to the page in their local language? Using content egg pro I am just able to show prices in their local currencies I would like the page to be translated too using auto geo location detection by users in different countries. Can you please guide if WPML offers something like that?

WPML supports diffrent currencies for diffrent countries along with the redirection feature but this is a WordPress plugin and designed to support currencies coming from WooCommerce and I’m not sure if what you are describing is a WordPress site and a WooCommerce website. I have a property portal and will most likely need 10 million+ words translated per month, which is approx EUR 3,300 or more per month. I see that WPML will use “segments” that have already been translated and not use credits, but how do I know what a segment is? Is it a whole sentence? If yes, then does the whole sentence need to be exactly the same to not charge me extra credits for a translation?
EUR 3k+ per month is a lot of money, so I would like to know if there is a way to reduce this.
You can do the following:
– add only one additional language at first
– don’t use Translate Everything Automatically mode
this way you can go to the WPML Translation Management and select individual posts and pages and translate them automatically in bulk by watching how credits are used

in a nutshell, WPML creates a new WordPress post/page per language for every post/page and in addition, an extra entry to keep the relations between the original post and the translated post. Please check the database model for details.
If your sites can handle this number of posts in the original language, using WPML shouldn’t slow it down significantly.
You can do the following to test WPML performance:
1. When configuring WPML, add only one additional language (you will be able to add more language later) and select the “Translate What You Choose” mode
This setup will allow you to translate selected posts/pages and monitor how adding more translations impacts your site performance
2. When configuring WPML, add some translation credits to your site (e.g. 60 000)
3. Go to WPML > Translation Management and use the filter to select a few posts/pages to translate automatically. Visit these pages on the frontend and check your site performance.
4. Go to WPML > Translation Management and translate more pages. Check your performance again.
With each iteration you can increase the number of post/pages to translate.

call to actions buttons – please let me know how you created those (do you use WordPress blocks? page builder such as Elementor, WPBakery, Divi, …)

For a community site that has posts in various languages, if a user chooses a language in the language selector, does it translate all languages? We have other plugin that only translates from 1 base language, so the posts in spanish and french are not translated… because it only translates from one base language (english in this case). So the posts in spanish and french are not recognized as english, so it does not translate them.
We need to translate everything, wether it’s a post in spanish, french or else. We want no base language, we want it to translate all languages, even if the post is not in english. Because the other plugin, if the post is in french, it does not translate it… because the base language is restricted to english… and the other posts in other languages do not get translated. We need to translate with no base language, but all languages to other languages. When the user selects to translate to french, it will translate it, even if the post’s language is not english.

WPML works a bit differently, let me explain.
1. When you configure WPML you need to add languages.
These are the languages supported by WPML and automatic translations: https://ate.wpml.org/mt_langs
2. WPML will translate your content only to the languages you added (and of course if these are supported for machine translation as in the table able (you need to see the check in at least one of the translation engines: Microsoft, Google, DeepL)
3. WPML translates your content on the backend and your users will the translations only for posts/pages etc. that have been translated.
4. To translate automatically you need translation credits. You will get 90 000 credits in the package but they won’t suffice for translating to many languages. WPML can translate automatically only the posts, pages, products, categories, tags and posts based on custom post types, also some forms. If you have other types of content on your site, please share the link to your site with me and I will check if this is something you can translate automatically too.

Hello, you put 120 000 in the “Number of words to translate” filed and two languages in the “Number of words to translate” field of the calculator which makes €206.00 EUR. I’m not sure if what you mean by editing videos and images. If you want to provide a different video for your translated version of the page you need to use the WPML Media Translation plugin.
I have English resources site with about 50K articles and growing. I would like to translate it in multiple languages and make sure the translation is indexable in Google. you don’t have to translate all of the pages/posts from your website. WPML allows you to select posts/pages in bulk to be translated automatically. You can use this feature to translate only some of your pages and/or to translate your pages progressively. What you can also do is to switch to the Microsoft engine (which is cheaper than DeepL) when translating some of your pages and see how successful – in terms of bring you traffic) these translations are. This engine is also pretty good these days, maybe you don’t need to reply only on DeepL. I’m not sure if you had a chance to check our credit calculator. If you plan to use automatic translation, it’s possible only to translate from the primary language to other languages, not the other way around.
Please answer the following questions, so I can give you a better reply for your case:
1. Does your site have posts and pages in Italian now?
2. Do you want to translate these pages to other languages from Italian to English and French automatically?
3. After finishing the translations, what do you want to do with Italian pages and posts? Delete them completely from your site?
4. What is the new primary language you want to set up after removing Italian? English? French?
So if I pay 99 euros and never renew, I would still be allowed to use it past the first year but don’t get support or updates, right?

I have an amazon affiliate gadgets review website. Right now the website is in English. I have recently started using content egg pro to show prices in local currencies which has had a huge impact on CTR and conversions.
My question is. Is it possible that using WPML plugin the website detects the user’s location and shows them a translated page automatically. For e.g one user is from USA they will be shown the page in English(which the site is in at the moment) while the other user is from Turkey, Brazil. Is it possible the user is shown or redirected to the page in their local language? Using content egg pro I am just able to show prices in their local currencies I would like the page to be translated too using auto geo location detection by users in different countries. Can you please guide if WPML offers something like that?

WPML supports diffrent currencies for diffrent countries along with the redirection feature but this is a WordPress plugin and designed to support currencies coming from WooCommerce and I’m not sure if what you are describing is a WordPress site and a WooCommerce website. I have a property portal and will most likely need 10 million+ words translated per month, which is approx EUR 3,300 or more per month. I see that WPML will use “segments” that have already been translated and not use credits, but how do I know what a segment is? Is it a whole sentence? If yes, then does the whole sentence need to be exactly the same to not charge me extra credits for a translation?
EUR 3k+ per month is a lot of money, so I would like to know if there is a way to reduce this.

You can do the following:
– add only one additional language at first
– don’t use Translate Everything Automatically mode
this way you can go to the WPML Translation Management and select individual posts and pages and translate them automatically in bulk by watching how credits are used
You will get 90 000 credits in the package for free so you have a lot of credits to experiment and see how WPML works.

in a nutshell, WPML creates a new WordPress post/page per language for every post/page and in addition, an extra entry to keep the relations between the original post and the translated post. Please check the database model for details.
If your sites can handle this number of posts in the original language, using WPML shouldn’t slow it down significantly.
You can do the following to test WPML performance:
1. When configuring WPML, add only one additional language (you will be able to add more language later) and select the “Translate What You Choose” mode
This setup will allow you to translate selected posts/pages and monitor how adding more translations impacts your site performance
2. When configuring WPML, add some translation credits to your site (e.g. 60 000)
3. Go to WPML > Translation Management and use the filter to select a few posts/pages to translate automatically. Visit these pages on the frontend and check your site performance.
4. Go to WPML > Translation Management and translate more pages. Check your performance again.
With each iteration you can increase the number of post/pages to translate.

the 39 euros package (Multilingual Blog) doesn’t allow you to translate automatically. If you plan to use automatic translation you will need the CMS package.
Translating:
menu – support both by the Blog and CMS packages
forms – only in CMS
popups – please let me know where the popups come from (provide the plugin name, I need to check if the plugin is compatible with WPML)
call to actions buttons – please let me know how you created those (do you use WordPress blocks? page builder such as Elementor, WPBakery, Divi, …)
tour packages – what are these? are these coming from a plugin?theme? What’s the name.

For a community site that has posts in various languages, if a user chooses a language in the language selector, does it translate all languages? We have other plugin that only translates from 1 base language, so the posts in spanish and french are not translated… because it only translates from one base language (english in this case). So the posts in spanish and french are not recognized as english, so it does not translate them.
We need to translate everything, wether it’s a post in spanish, french or else. We want no base language, we want it to translate all languages, even if the post is not in english. Because the other plugin, if the post is in french, it does not translate it… because the base language is restricted to english… and the other posts in other languages do not get translated. We need to translate with no base language, but all languages to other languages. When the user selects to translate to french, it will translate it, even if the post’s language is not english.

WPML works a bit differently, let me explain.
1. When you configure WPML you need to add languages.
These are the languages supported by WPML and automatic translations:

2. WPML will translate your content only to the languages you added (and of course if these are supported for machine translation as in the table able (you need to see the check in at least one of the translation engines: Microsoft, Google, DeepL)
3. WPML translates your content on the backend and your users will the translations only for posts/pages etc. that have been translated.
4. To translate automatically you need translation credits. You will get 90 000 credits in the package but they won’t suffice for translating to many languages. WPML can translate automatically only the posts, pages, products, categories, tags and posts based on custom post types, also some forms. If you have other types of content on your site, please share the link to your site with me and I will check if this is something you can translate automatically too.

Hello, you put 120 000 in the “Number of words to translate” filed and two languages in the “Number of words to translate” field of the calculator which makes €206.00 EUR. I’m not sure if what you mean by editing videos and images. If you want to provide a different video for your translated version of the page you need to use the WPML Media Translation plugin.

you don’t have to translate all of the pages/posts from your website. WPML allows you to select posts/pages in bulk to be translated automatically. You can use this feature to translate only some of your pages and/or to translate your pages progressively. What you can also do is to switch to the Microsoft engine (which is cheaper than DeepL) when translating some of your pages and see how successful – in terms of bring you traffic) these translations are. This engine is also pretty good these days, maybe you don’t need to reply only on DeepL. I’m not sure if you had a chance to check our credit calculator.
